Who Do You Choose: Your Spouse Or Your Child?

OK. Here's the scenario. Your house is broken into late one night and the insane thief orders you all to the living room. He doesn't want money but rather to play with your mind and soul. He hands you a loaded gun and tells you that you're about to play a very simple game. He tells you that you must shoot and kill either your spouse or your child...your choice. If you don't, he will kill BOTH of them and leave you alive to deal with the loss. I know this may be a little morbid but I'm interested in what your choices would be and why. What goes through your head in a crisis like this where there is NO good result? By the way you can change the spouse part to boyfriend or girlfriend if you're not currently married.
