hey, i've been trying but uncsuccessful in improving my typing speed to more than 65wpm!:( i dont use the exact touch-typing techniques, but close enough. Any suggestions? has anyone tried the Dvorak layout which is supposed to be really helpful in making your typing fast in a few weeks? The most common layout is the 'QWERTY' model that almost all of us use!

Well the thing that has helped me to type so fast is that I type everyday. Sometimes for a long period of time. In high school I had to take a keyboarding class that taught me how to type properly. With that and typing everyday my typing got better and faster. I would say that I do type around 60wpm. Maybe a little less, or more. It's been awhile since I have took a typing test. Those are the things that have helped me.

Hi Mkartic, Welcome to myLot! I am not a touch-typist too, I know the right way of doing it but most of the time I use the ones which are the nearest. I have never use a DVORAK type yet or seen one and I think I would have a problem there if I accustom to that when all other keyboards are QWERTY ones. There are so many free typing tutorials on the net some are online and some are downloadable, I have found one and downloaded for my kids and its RapidTyping by pinokiosoft. By the way I would be lucky to type 35wpm so I want my kids to learn this things at an early age better than I do. Have nice day.

You're smart to want your kids to start learning the keyboard early. While I had lessons in school, it wasn't until much later that I learned how to touch-type. It's a real life saver. Self taught. My daughter is already interested in using the computer, so I figure that she will be interested in learning how to touch type on keyboard very soon. Actually, she already types some and it's helping her learn how to spell words! So that can't be a bad thing!

Just lots and lots of practice. That's how I learned to touch type. First you have to align your fingers up right on the keyboard, put your index finger tips on the key that has the ridges, that would be F and J. The the other keys will automatically line up. Then you just type slowly on keyboard onto Word pad or elsewhere, like blog. And the speed will happen after about a year. Now it's faster for me to touch type after ten years practice than to pick and type! Pick a favorite book with large print like a college text book and transcribe that onto word pad. That's what I did. I used my sociology college book, called Marriage and the Family, and transcribed each word onto my computer. It was just for personal use, but the practice helped my typing and surprisingly I can still remember the textbook almost verbatim by heart! Another wonderful benefit. There are not easy short cuts to learning touch typing, other than to simply practice daily. And resist the urge to look at your keyboard. P.S. Use Mozilla Firefox or something with built in spell checker that will automatically identify when you misspell or mis-type a word. That will help your typing technique greatly. Wish I'd had that when I first started. Best of luck!

i type 92+ words per minute....and the way i learned how...please dont laugh---i chatted with people on yahoo! I would chat with people here and there make up names etc just so i could type i got to where i could type to 25 people and keep up then i knew i was going well. when i took my test i got 92 words of course i dont chat so much nowdays but my speed floats depending on what i am doing and what i have to do but if you have time to get on the computer log on to messenger and just chat away not only is it fun and you get to know some people and hear funny stories it will also help you increase your typing speed.

As with any skill, your typing would greatly improve with practice. Typing everyday will help you get used to the keyboard. It's perfectly ok if you don't follow a specific typing technique. I actually didn't study the basic technique that most use such as placing your finger on a certain letter. I just type as to how I am comfortable with. Also, do not try to type as fast as you can actually type. You will be more prone to mistakes and your fingers may get used to committing them again and again. Take it slowly and don't be afraid to look at your keyboard from time to time while typing. Touch typing will gradually come. I always use this sentence as exercise, "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." It has all the letters of the alphabet. Hope this helps.

Hello mkartic... I have a suggestion. This is how I learned how to type the CORRECT way, many many years ago. 1. Put on your favorite tune, preferably one that's not too fast, and is in a 4/4 time beat signature. (ex: 1234-1234-1234-1234 etc.) 2. Place your fingers accordinly on the keyboard. Left hand: baby finger on "A"...ring finger on "S"...next on "D"...pointer on "F". Right hand: baby on "colon"...ring on "L"...next on "K"...pointer on "J". Now, and in time with the beat of the music, start typing 1234-1234-1234-1234... starting with the letter "J" then the next 4 beats, type the letter "F", and so no. Go through the alphabet in this fashion., and only move your wrist to reach the other letters above and below the "F"/"J" row, using the finger that's closest to the letters & numbers above and below this line. Your pinkys are used for caps, tabs, and shifts keys. Space bare is typed by using only your thumbs. That's it. It will take a while to get used to, but in time and with practice, you will become the speediest expert. Good luck, and have fun. Cheers; commanderxo

There are so many type softwares that you can download some and choose one that fit you most. It can help develop both your speed and accuracy at the same time. And if you trim your fingernail often you will find you can type more easily.
