When will they ever learn?

R.I. Police Arrest Man With Record .491 Blood Alcohol Level A Blood alcohol level of .5 is considered to be fatal, .4 is comatose. (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,389223,00.html) So you get the idea, well this guy was actually able to drive. He was removed from his vehicle and put into a detox unit where he was sedated. He was charged with DWU ( what a shock!) and resisting arrest. Now, we have all heard how dangerous drunk driving is and we all know someone who was killed or seriously injured by a drunk driver. Why do people continue to do this? Any ideas on what can be done to stop this from happening again short of giving them wood alcohol (blind people normally don't drive!)

I don't understand why people do this. How would they feel if someone was driving and driven and killed someone they loved, like there mother, father, sister, brother or even one of there children. It breaks my heart when I hear of stores of people drinking and driven. All my friends knows that if they need a ride because they have to much to drink they know to call me no matter what time it is. I don't care if it is 1 in the morning. I will get out of my warm bed to go get them. I could save a life.

When my son lived at home, I always told him that. If he had been drinking or was with a driver who was impaired, call me, I will come get him, no questions asked. He never called. You are a good person to extend that to all of your friends. Most of my friends are non-drinkers or only drink at home, they all know better then to drink and drive. This kind of thing really twists my knickers.

People really don't stop to think or don't care to think about what could happen. I was hit while riding on a motorcycle by a drunk drive. It is only by the Grace of God that I am still here! I too always told all the kids I would pick them up, no questions asked. They didn't call either.

I have been called a few times to go out and get my friends. I called my mother one time becuase the person that was supposed to not drink got drunk and there was no way I was driving with her or her driving. My mother picked us up at 3am and was not upset at all.

Out in my area, there was one case probably around 2 years ago where two people were killed by a drunk driver. The guy was going in the wrong direction on the Meadowbrook Parkway, & had a head-on collision with a wedding limo, killing the driver & an 8 year old girl. I had gone into detail here at response #1: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1544384.aspx No one knows why it still happens, however, it is probably the first case in which murder instead of manslaughter charges were actually filed. One thing that MIGHT help is that actual murder charges filed by a DA needs to be commonplace instead of just a rarity. It'll at least get people to think before doing. I don't know if it was coincidence, or if this case was what sparked Tom Suozzi of Nassau County to enact it into law that drunk drivers' cars also get confiscated & put up for auction.

You know, I think that sounds like a great idea. If they get a DWI, the car is confiscated and auctioned. That would sure make it more harder to drive with that suspended license. And yes, it should murder, manslaughter is killing someone without forethought -- everyone realizes the dangers of drunk driving.

We take their license, then they drive without one. We take the car away from them, and they just borrow one from someone else. What if we put a wrist guard or ankle guard on them that will transmit to a monitoring device. Let us know that the drunk is in a car again. At the same time delivering an electric shock to the dummy.

I like the electric shock part. You know in some countries in the middle east they still stone people. I wonder what they do with their drunk drivers?

I heard about this too, and I couldn't believe what I was reading. people like this really need to learn to think or something. Putting someone's life in danger just because you had to have something to drink is stupid. Especially drinking in excess like that. that's just too much.

Any kind of drinking and driving is too much. What this man did to (at least to me) is attempted murder, he could very easily have killed one or more people, but they were lucky. He should be given a sentence as such.

Hi Deb_place, Those people makes me see red, if caught their license shoudl be taken away from permenantly and their cars should be taken away to be crushed. Tamara

And then to punish them, a lifetime on house arrest. If they go anywhere, it must be by foot or in a medical emergency in an ambulance. They should not be allowed to even ride in a car. No mercy for people like this.
