Better said, when should we as parents incorporate swimming into our child's life? Does your location matter? We live in FL so my daughter has been in the pool since 6 months old.

I have always had my children in the pool. I think it is one of the most responsible things you can do as a parent. Teach them early to not be afraid of it, but also teach them how dangerous it can be. My sons are seven and twelve and they are both very independent in the water. My seven year old dives, swims underwater, etc. And he's never taken a swim class. It's just been from being around the water with me.

It still amazes me how many people don't consider this as you did. We were adamant that our daughter be able to swim as soon as possible, it was like a huge weight came off my shoulders when I knew that she could get to the side herself. Now she loves swimming, which is wonderful, but my goal was just to get her so she could get to the side!

I think that parents should start incorporating swimming into a child's life as soon as possible. I know some parents who start their children out as soon as the doctor says that it is good for the baby. My daughter didn't learn to swim until later because of her breathing problems.

I am sorry for the problems she had, that is always scary! I grew up on the water so it has always been second nature for me. I am glad she is doing well now, does she like the water now?
