For Windows Vista Users - Do You Notice Extreme Hardisk Activity?

Hard Disk - Internal HDD

For the past couple of weeks, I seem to notice that my laptops hard disk activity is very active. The hard disk led blinks rapidly and emits a noise that irritates me. I checked the space available I have on the drive and saw that I only have 5 GB left out of my 120 GB hard disk. I find this odd because I am storing so much data on the computer. Last month I checked and there was still 30 GB of free space. I am regularly updating MS patches and my McAfee anti-virus is up to date and so I believe I don't have a virus on the computer. Is there anyone who can assist or explain why this is happening? Thanks in advance.

i dont think it be a vista problem that i have vista on my laptop but only had it couple of weeks.. anyway i not 100% sure but when getting much harddrive activity as you are, and maybe a little slow down, also if space seems lower then should be.. I would say that maybe its time to do a defragmentation of your harddrive.. obviously after a time of downloading and installing, maybe deleting files sometimes.. anything you put on harddrive becomes fragmented, scattered different sectors of the hardrive, so it makes it that much harder for your computer to find the bit of data you are needing.. so all the time, while you using a particular application, the needle on hardrive is going rapidly back and forth looking for the bits of scattered data.. defragmenting will sort the data out and put it in order. i am sorry,, having problems in trying to explain this... I hope you understand what i mean.. basically do a defragmentation over night ok.. i think that will make a huge difference to speed, less harddrive activity and more space

i will also say.. those hardrive problems you get with any operation system if you use computer a lot and not defrag ok..

I also have windows vista on my laptop and I have been having problems with my computer always restarting, windows vista has alot of kinks in it that microsoft is unable to fix right now, what i recommend is changing over to Windows Xp I have it on my desktop and I have not had any problems with it.

I would try to clean your harddisk. I've noticed that cleaning up your data from your most recent restore point seems to free up a lot of space. Then you should probably perform a defrag. If the problem persists, I'd say...downgrade to Windows XP. It's a rather sad piece of advice.

I had to get another CPU so it wouldn't make that sound but it only made it go faster, it didn't change the noise.

It is a usual thing, windows checks the drives of your hard disk when you try to open the windows explorer or run a software. If your hard disk is packed with so much data, then it takes a while to perform the checking, for this reason you will see more hdd activities. However this activity is thigh in vista rather than xp. Try to clean up for some space on your hdd, run disk defragment and scan your drives.
