It seems that the credit crunch is squeezing the very life from the middle classes, and because they are having serious cash flow problems, they are turning to up market Pawn brokers. The pawn brokers report that it is nothing nowadays to see a woman waltz in with a piece of jewellery worth a couple of thousand and ask to pawn it!!!..apparently a very well dressed gentleman entered one pawn brokers with a Pocket watch...he said he HAD to pawn it to pay the mortgage that month!!!!.Its interesting to know that everyone is finding it tight at the moment...

Yes it does not surprise me that pawn brokers are seeing a boom in business, in fact it is an ideal time for a lot of opportunity seekers now to step into this credit crisis and make money out of it! I have not thought of any opportunities yet though!!

Yes Rose, its an ideal opportunity for those with spare money to cash in on peoples misfortune. There was something on the radio the other day which showed what a sad world we live in..there had been a lot of money lending going on in and around the city, this was bieng done by unscrupulous people, they onviously were charging exorbitant rates of interest, and inevitably there were a good few people who were unable to meet the high repayments. But because of fear of recrimination, they would not tell the authorities who their lenders were...now I find that very sad..and many owed far more than they had initially borrowed.

I could not be a loan shark, they are people who to me are not normal that they can treat people like that. The best part is, they could make a decent profit out of it by just being nice, they do not need to handle it the way they do. I would never lend off people like that, and I am hoping that I never have to have a loan again.

The money lending business is a big one,and there are enough problems with the way that some of the major banks conduct themselves ,let alone the little loan sharks having a go too!Its pitiful that someone can lend someone say one hundred pounds and then charge as much in interest again to let them repay it..its certainly a sad world..yes there are those who are in desperate need of money to cope with day to day life,..but we also have to remember the flip side of the coin where there are some who borrow to buy substances etc...and if the money lenders, loan sharks are lending to them, well they ought to be hauled over the coals!!

Hi ruby, I am sure this is happening really with this crisis we are experiencing..Good thing for these people they have something to pawn! I am like that also when I was single..LOL! I have collected jewelries since it was my passion those time and whenever I want to have a project like changes of the house, furniture, I will pawn it..LOL! Until I wasn't able to recover a lot of it..Those have sentimental value for me but this is life..LOL! After that, I didn't start buying again..I gave some of my jewelries to my Sister! I left nothing to myself! LOL!

Hi Che ,thats the thing that may well worry me,we pawn someting of great sentimental value, and then find we never have the money to get it back!!it would be very sad to lose something so precious to you.

Hey, Ruby222...good discussion, BUT I think things will get a lot worse before they get better! Too long, we have been a "HAVE" society....and I think now the rugs going to pulled out from underneath us! We will definitely have too tighten our purse strings! Right here, it is terrible...gas is $7.45 a gallon! The biggest increase is gas, heating fuels....and the next is food! It's a real trickle down effect, reverting back to grains. Cost more to harvest grain (fuel) to transport, so it is reflected in all meats....all baked goods! Rice is up 100%, due to flooding! There will be a bigger gap between the rich & poor! So we all have to do some heavy thinking and prioritize the necessities! I pray that I never have to use a pawnbroker! Have a rainbow day!

Oh yes there is definately a knock on effect all the way down the line ,and im sure that you are right in saying that we have had it too good for too long, and now we will have to go back to basics a little, and tighten the reins...but the same as you..I pray I never have to use a pawn broker.

Ruby222....Thanks for the "kudos"...I really appreciate that! Saturday nite, my son borrowed my truck, went to our only neighborhood pub......anything & everything was stolen.....have two tanks in truck....all fuel stolen...$264.00..all of my landscaping equipment....got me for nearly a $1000.00! Hurts when you are my age (or anyone's)....Things are going to get serious, just because of our dependency on fuel! Thanks for being a wonderful myLotter with great responses! Cheers & Rainbows!

Yeah ruby, I hear that. My bf keeps asking me if I want to take my broken gold jewlery to the jewelers for cash. I keep telling him I probably won't get much because they pay by weight and it won't add up to anything. I am trying to find ways to make money because I am not working right now and when I'm ready and don't know what kind of job I will be able to get. It's really scary. The price of everything keeps going up. I don't know what we're going to do to make ends meet.

I think that there are many people who are just about keeping their heads above water, the soaring price hikes are hitting us all hard. But I saw one piece of good news, the supermarket giants were lowering the cost of their fuel.at last!!

I am not surprised at all by this kind of news because it is around the world already that is in crisis not only one place......so it is normal to pawn things just to struggle on the life that we have now.
