Let's undress

I paid my first visit this year to the beach today. About a thousand other people thought they would do likewise. Imagine if you will. A war sunny day with a slight breeze. The water was warm (for the UK) and welcoming and many fancied a dip. All around me were men, woman and children in various stages of undress. Each desperately trying to hold a sandy towel around them to protect their modesty as they grappled with their undergarments. One or two though, just threw caution to the wind. Stripped and put on their swimming costumes. I have no problem with nakedness, although at time it was difficult to know where to look. I either got a good look at someone's foundation garments coming off, or the real thing in all its unclothed glory. Are you a stripper or a cover up person on the beach? I'm a cover up merchant myself. I get changed at home or in the car.

I keep myself covered up. Where were there the changing rooms? I mean has all caution thrown to the wind or do the authorities over there think that all of you have turned into a bunch of pagans or has it gone back to the time of Roman Britain? Me I would have put my bathing suit on at home, put on a skirt and a top, and taken the skirt and top off in the car under a blanket and in the shade so no one could see me.

I guess I am behind the times. In Vancouver, we had changing rooms, but I guess the changing rooms are now used for something else.

Changing rooms? If there were changing rooms I wouldn't have had a discussion. LOL. Very few beaches have public changing rooms here. Most people manage fine, but here are always a few that show more than they ought. I'm like you. I change at home or in the car.

The practicality of just wearing your suit under your clothes is not an option in England? LOL And a robe or sweats to put on over a wet suit until you get home is also not an option? You have strange thought processes in your country P1ke. LOL

The sun shines so rarely here Sparky that we all rush from wherever we are to the beach costumes wrapped in our towels and then think: "Bugger. Where am I going to change?". Some people are very well organised and do just as you suggest. But there some, and they were out in force yesterday that clearly don't give it much forethought at all.

Well, I would be shocked if I were at the beach and someone stripped. I believe that is public indecency here in the US. I would not get dressed at the beach. I usually wear my swimsuit under an outfit and then just take the outer outfit off.

Oh I am definately a cover up kind of person. I wouldn't want to inflict anything that might be to devastating on anyone and ruin their enjoyment of the beach. Being older, nature does have a way of redefining the sculpting the body and it's not such a pleasant sight as when I was younger..firmer and more uplifted! LOL

It was the older ones (I don't count the very little children) who seemed to be the least reserved Jill. I am sure that you are exaggerating. I bet that you are gorgeous.

If I were to even bother going to the beach (I've never really liked it - too many people), I would wear my suit under my clothing and disrobe there. I wouldn't get dressed again because of all the sand that sticks to you. I would just hang around until I was dry and then get back in the car. But, since I will NEVER wear a bathing suit in public, it's not likely that scenario will take place. It's been since I was younger than my teens that I was on a beach in a bathing suit and I was mucho modest even then.

I cover up too. So when I come over for my cooking lesson we won't be going to the beach then?! LOL.

LOL - you have quite the memory!!! No, that's right - unless you want to walk along the boardwalk or hit the Atlantic City casinos (not that I have the money to do that). But, you'll probably be too busy entertaining my mother who will be thrilled at someone visiting from somewhere else!

Well I admit I will put on what I need to wear swimming at home.. I wouldn't want to make the others envious of my over voluptous body..Or go blind..lol I also think those that would change in front of children is not right and vice versa. I am to embarassed by my body to show it ot all in it's unsightly pugginess. I would however love a swim right now. It is the perfect weather right now for a good swim. Not many options where I live though it is either a public pool or taking your chances swimming with the bugs, snakes and whatever is floating in the water or under it. We have lots of lakes, creeks, and ponds and 90% of them are not fit to swim only fish and the other 10% is to far away to enjoy.

I have no doubt that your body is well worth going blind for!!! I am not a big river of lake swimmer. Not for the other creatures here, but they are usually so dirty looking. The thought of meeting a snake or an alligator (in some parts of the US) is simply terrifying and I'll watch whilst you swim if you don't mind!

It had not occurred to these people that they would have to change. I am glad it is not only us Americans that are getting dumber. I am a cover-up sort of person, I think these thing through a head of time and would plan for events like this. I would change at home both times.

ho pikey me I am also a cover up person as I have a lot to coverup so I change at home or in the car. I do have some modesty and a feeling of kindness for strangers as i do not want to shock them with my less than size twelve figure. I am not going to say what size I wear but I would be looking for a swim suit in the plus sizes. I havent been down to Newport Beach in ages but in the summer we have so many tourists at times its just no fun asits horizon to horizon with people. I love to stroll on the beach when there are just a few people there so I can a ctually see the sand and the water and everything inbetween.

I love strolling along too Hatley. Especially at night.
24 Jul 08
Im a cover up person, I would either just like you get ready at home or somewhere where I cant be spied on!!! whereas coming home I would allow myself enough time to dry off so that I can wear my costume home and not have to try and get dressed on the beach!! Thats one thing I miss about Butlins, we walked out of the gates and you were on the beach!! Fab!!

I suppose that holiday camps do have that advantage Cinders. I have to say that the sand does get everywhere. But I'd have to be pretty desperate to strip completely. That said, the older that I get, the less reserved I am about such things.
24 Jul 08
I hate it when sand gets between your toes and you have to wait for your feet to dry off so that you can rub it off. It can be quite painful too!! The one thing that never made sense to me was when we were younger and living in Cornwall, we used to visit beaches regularly and my parents used to tell us to go and wash the sand off our feet in the sea but then we would have to walk on the beach to get to the car so we would end up with sandy feet!! Parents, aye never make sense!!!
@p1kef1sh (45681)

We never make sense Cinders But we're always right! Actually I still have some sand between my toes and it's scratching like mad. I must wash them before I go to bed.

I know the car quick change thing. My daughter and her friends are always wriggling away in the back slipping from one out fit to another. Not so easy when you are the driver in a 70 mph traffic jam hurtling towards the coast though!

Okay...be patient with my ignorance. Are you saying people change out of their street clothes into their bathing suits out in the open on the beach. The beaches that I have been to, people wear their swimsuits to the beach or already have them on under their clothing or their is a beach house near where they can change. I don't think I would feel confortable changing in public.

That's profound. "Separated by a common language". I went on vacation in Jamaica earlier this year and my group ended up socializing with a group from the UK. We had so much fun. We did discuss some of our misconceptions about each other as well as some perceptions that we felt were accurate. Ever since I have really been fascinated by the differences between the US and UK cultures because I never imagined that our cultures were all that different.

Actually I am planning on it for next year. I keep in touch with one person I met on my trip and they have given me an invitation to come visit. That is something that is interesting also is to see how other countries view and report on the news in the US. It is usually a very different more unbiased perspective than what is reported here. Do you find that true about the UK?

auhauah this is a funny situation... once a time i was walking on beach with my friends and some girls decided to undress and run to the sea. i still looking with my open mouth :o how could they do that!? the funniest part is my friend running across the beach with their suits and them naked following him xD

I am not a beach person, give me a nice clorinated pool where I can see the bottom and don't have to worry about what is swimming with me - well, other than the people. And, since the nearest beach for me is on a lake and I really hate to swim in the lakes... I change at home and go to the pool - when I swim.

I'm a cover-upper. I am dressed at home and usually wear a t-shirt over and most times the t-shirt does not come off unless I have cut-offs on. I love watching people at the beach or anywhere for that matter. The beach can be very interesting. Old men in speedos are not interesting at all.

I know ..,huh? that and the big ladies in bikinis. Got to commend their confidence for sure. I'm a fairly small person and have always been told I shouldn't be so self-concious on the beach. still, I tend to go with the cut-offs and a modest top. not sure why but if I've been jealous of anything in these others, it is their carefree attitudes and seemingly huge self confidence levels.

I am very lucky in that I live so close to the beach so I will change ready at home and put clothes over and walk down. When it is time to get off the beach I will go into the ladies toilets and dress and bus back home. There is no need to undress or dress on the beach really and personally I don't fancy being on show or seeing others. I avoid busy times too and go down later in the day as I don't like to be out in the sun that much. Hope you enjoyed your day. Ellie :D

We had a lovely afternoon thanks Ellie. But it was busy. I had forgotten that all the schools had broken up so the holiday makers were out in force. The traffic was horrendous and the queue to the Sandbanks ferry so long (they were queued back to the hour and a half wait sign on the Poole side) that it was quicker to drive round! It is amazing how people are happy to strip off though on the beach. I of course maintained a sense of decorum and remained clothed throughout!

For a start I wouldnt have gone to that beach,I would have picked a quieter little bay,but thats Piky!!loves the throngs...I said throngs..not thongs!!I love the beach as long as it is a relatively quiet beach. The madding crowds dont do a lot for me,but thats just me!I know what you mean about the undressing bit though, loland there is no way that I would trust any towel to cover my nether regions, while my cossie was going on!!blimey...but I would wear it under my clothes and then slip my clothes off ...but that sand it gets everywhere!!in every nook and cranny we own!the worst thing is that when you get home you appear tp have taken half of the beach home with you!!Ok..SO did you sit there on a towel, with a knotted hanky on your head?your shirt sleeves rolled up and your trouser legs matching..socks and sandals?ohhh gis a clue rofl

I loathe crowded beaches Ruby, but sometimes you have to do these things to keep daughters and their friends happy! I prefer to dress/undress privately too. As to what did I wear. I put a photo of me up in one of your responses somewhere! I have copied in Ljegbers response on the previous page. I'm in a photo kind of mood.

Well pikey, here in the USA we are not allowed to change on the beach unless we are a little child. If we did that we would be arrested for indecent exposure. They change on the beach? We all usually go to the beach with swimsuits on and coverups of clothes on top so we can just pull them off. That's a very interesting place you live in. First they straighten the roads for drunks, now this
