Where did they go wrong with Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third?

Last night, my daughter and I were watching Shrek the Third and the night before we watched Shrek 2. For me, neither movie measures up to the original Shrek movie. My least favorite part of both films is that Fiona and Shrek are seperated for most of the movie. So there is little interaction. Neither film is really about their relationship, but more of a buddy film with him and Donkey. Have you noticed that? Sometimes I wish that I'd never seen the original Shrek so that I could more fully enjoy the last two movies. But I do love parts of both movies. For instance, I love the girl power scenes in Shrek the Third where Fionna organizes all the princesses for battle. And all the scenes with Prince Charming. That was funny. The second Shrek was pretty good with the parts about cat and Donkey and Shrek in the forest searching for magical potions. Actually that is my daughter's favorite scene, where Shrek gets attacked by the cat. She replays that scene constantly with her stuffed beanies. And she always makes me play the part of Shrek! Anyway, what were your least favorite and most favorite parts of Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third? How do you think the movies could have been made differently to measure up to Shrek?

I liked Shrek The Third because of the message of the story. There were also some nice gags like the one where Prince Charming is questioning Pinocchio that starts saying things like "I don't know where he is not" (you can read it here: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Shrek_the_Third#Dialogue). First one was more about gags so it was the most funny and Shrek 2 was the worst for me but it was also pretty nice.

Yes, it does have funny moments and I love those. Especially the part with Pinnochio

That cat is pretty cool! He's one of my favorite characters of all time in Shrekville!

even though my children are teenagers we still watched the third movie. It was really funny but seemed to be missing a lot because as you said it was a typical Disney buddy movie and did not have the same attitude as the original.

I have not seen Shrek 3 yet, but I do agree the original Shrek was better than the first sequel, Shrek 2. The first one was so good it would be hard to equal the success, which is a problem for a lot of sequels. The thing I enjoyed most about Shrek 2 was at the end when they had the DVD extras. They had something similar to American Idol, even using Simon Cowell as a character in which he critiqued any of the options you chose to have sing, like Prince Charming, Donkey, or the King, the frog.

Oh! I forgot about that part. We rarely get to see that. Our DVD remote is broken.

I love all the Shrek movies...but I must admit that I like the first one the best. I can tell you why I like the first one, I love the romance aspect, that may seem odd for a kids movie, but I do. I am a big fan of romantic comedies, and I would say that at it's heart that's what Shrek is. I have many scenes that I could name from the other 2 that I just love, but it doesn't have the charm of the first to me...

Same for me! The romantic comedy made the first Shrek so appealing! I've always thought that's why it appealed to so many people. And as for the second two Shrek movies, they do have lots of good moments. The supper scene with Shrek and Fiona's Dad is hilarious. I laugh at that one everytime!

Yep! My kid is nuts about all the Shrek movies so we have to watch them a couple times a week. So many subtle details you can pick up each time. It took me four times of watching Shrek 2 to realize how Shrek got the idea to make a giant supersize Gingerbread Man. Remember when they were in the dungeon? When tiny Gingerbread hopped up on the window sill, you could see this tiny castle in the background, so it looked as if Gingerbread was this giant cookie! That's how Shrek got the idea! The other thing I liked was when Donkey and Shrek and the cat were chained up, and Donkey was babbling away and cat said something like, "Must hang on, before I too go totally insane." Then he looked up and there was a talking puppet, Pinocchio. And he said, "Too late!" It's those funny moments that make the movie worth watching. Thinking about it now, I don't mind the second movie so much. But the third Shrek does grate on my nerves a bit.

I love in the second one how when Mungo pulls the giant cup of coffee off the Farbucks, all the people run out of it, across the street, into another Farbucks. I love the dragon-donkeys (dronkeys?)! The thing is, all of them have lots of little things hidden in them that you have to see them multiple times to catch...
