Why there isn't a cents sign on a computer keyboard?

Hi,
I've always wondered about this. On a typewriter there is the dollar sign ($) and an cents sign. But there is no cents sign on a computer keyboard. I could sure use that sign when I type instead of spelling out "cents".
So why isn't there a cents sign on the keyboard??

From what I heard, it's because no-one actually uses the ¢ symbol any more, at least no-one commercially. Even the supermarkets tend to put '$0.50 savings' rather than 50¢ savings.
On a more important note, why can't US keyboards put the @ and " signs in the opposite places, like normal people do? ;)

Thanks for your response!
Well I'd still like to be able to use the cents sign!
I don't know for sure but I'd swear I've seen signs in stores that say 50 cents off. (I can't get the code to work )
Good point about the @ and the " signs!

good question, you have to put 8.02 for people to understand what you are saying, I guess when they were planning the keyboard they didn't find it was all that necessary.

I'm sure they've run out of space on the keyboard, what with all the other symbols that we might use frequently.
Since there is another way to portray cents - .01 - I guess they don't think it's necessary to rearrange everything for that one key. I don't think too many people use the 'cents' symbol.

The computer keyboard is already has to much keys to begin with. If every symbol would be included the keyboard size will be doubled and it will be cluttered and hard to use. I believe the designers selected the most common characters that everyone uses. For the other characters that you need you press a combination of keys to produce them. i.e for cents you hold down ALT and type 162.

You must have been reading my mind. That has been driving me
crazy the few days. I have wanted to type that some many
times and I just stare at the keyboard and don't understand
how they forgot to put that in. Everything else is there why
not the cents sign???I just can't see how it
was forgotten. Who can we write to. Who is the head of
keyboards? There has to be someone! We must find
out.I can't wait to see how this discussion goes.

Because there is limited space on a keyboard and it would be redundant. The $ symbol is there, and the use of that is prevalent. As another poster pointed out, there are codes you can use to get the cent symbol.

yes me too. I do also wonder why there's no cents sign in the computer keyboard but i think its like (ñ Ñ) these characters are not in the keyboard. you can have this by holding the alt+164 for the smaller and 165 for the capital one.
