when computer hard-drives crashes,what can be done to it?

i'm a young phone engineer and i also work on phone with computer system,so many times i got problem with my harddrives,getting corrupt even i have a n uptodate anti-virus,but it seems not to stop that and this has caused me to loss so many documents bcos most time is either i have to format the drive if it can still be used or i have to get another one,which has caused me to loss so many materials. And currently,i've been faced with same problem,and a guy told me that before formating it,there is a way of recovering those files,and i'll like to ask anyone that knows how to recover files from crash or corrupted harddrives to give me clues on how to go about it. your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
