My moms dog has a prob.....

he just sits and itches his back by his tail constantly!! It is red and sore. they have took him to vets and had him checked for everything, he has no fleas, wormss, or anything. It is so sad too watch. It has gotten so bad sometimes that my mom has even given him half of a tylenol pm so he will just relax and go to sleep, he is a big dog. I told her that it almost seems to me that it is a nervous thing, like when people bite their fingernails.

My brothers dog did that once before. The vet shaved him in that spot and gave me some cream to put on it and gave him an antihistamine to help with the itching. He stopped chewing on it right away and it is completely healed now.

I had a dog that developed an allergy to the corn in her dry dog food. She had really bad hot spots - the vet ended up putting her on steroids for a while to calm the spots on her back by her tail. Once her dog food was switched to something without corn, she was fine. But she sure was miserable til we figured it out.:(

I had a Maltese that did that. She chewed her hip so badly that it was raw and sometimes bleeding. She also had no fleas, but the vet told me she had a sklin alergy to something. I think it also had something to do with a nervous habit like the poster above mentioned. Nothing helped that I can remember.

Hello, Our old dog used to do that and we were told that it was arthridous, (i spelt that wrong) but i have no idea if thats what its really from or not.
