Responding to an e-mail about death

A friend is dying. She's a friend I met through friends and I've known her for the past 17 yrs. You can't say I hope you feel better or I'm sorry. I thanked her for letting us know and not have to read about it.I told her thanks for being in my life.I told her if she needed someone to talk to and I said It's not very often we get the chance to tell people how we were affected by them. I also asked if she would tell someone hello when she get's there. Was that out of line? There's more I want to say I just don't want to sound horrible.
