I have alot of people come into my store and ask for a job..this is a college town and with my type of store its understandable..(a Hippie store similiar to the late 60's type)Then I have alot of people my age that know they can trust me come in since I've owned this store for 16 yrs..they are dressed in all sorts of ways, but it doesn't bother me at all..now Society says to get a job..you have to dress a certain way,act a certain way and or it will be given to someone who's resume is better...
What do you think is a proper look or action to get a job?
Do you feel it shouldn't make a difference?
Who wants to work with me?

Hi Rosekitty, My wardrobe is probably that old that it would be quite fashionable in your shop LOL. I dress in what I feel comfortable in myself and don't follow fashion at all, however I do tend to stick with classic styles that don't date too much and when I work at my job now I have to wear strict uniform which in fact I prefer as I don't have to think what I am going to have to wear to work each day. I feel to gete a job initially though you should be smartly dressed with CV with you. Ellie :D

Thanks Rosekitty, I would probably be unreliable timewise though as it is a fair distance to travel each day so I will let you employ someone else, we've tried brooms, magic carpets and even electric powered hoovers and none have got us to the party in time so communting will be a problem for me Ellie :D

If a job was open to applicants in your store then I guess really that you wouldnt expect them to be dolled up to the nines to have an interview,if your store is a sort of hippy type store then it wouldnt be any good going for the interview dressed in a suit and tie!!But here i nthe UK they tend to have more of a dress code for interviews and there are endless tips and hints on how to get that job you want and what to say and wear at that precious interview!!but im sure on the day it all boils down to the best man/woman wins!!it well could be that one day you may feel sparkling, and another day you could feel C***,so on the sparking day your personality may shine through and the job would be yours!

I think a job applicant should dress in a manner appropriate to the job, especially if it's in retail. Neat, clean, the best clothing you've got. It shows the employer that you care enough to dress up, it shows respect. You don't have to wear a suit and tie or heels and a dress but you should put your best foot forward.
Hey, hire some old folks! I'm 54 and have been looking for a year, they all hire younger people. Or have a job-share, old folks taking classtimes and students taking weekends?

Convention in the UK requires a business suit, collar and tie. Now you are welcome to collar and tie me anytime you like. But maybe not in the store unless you are looking for a new mannequin! I'll just wear my leather thong in store. Makes it easier to move around. Is that OK? Or are you looking for something a little less formal?

I kind of think it depends on the atmosphere. For a place like yours, I think that a style and spunk might be appreciated but, I wouldn't go in wearing a suit for the interview.
In a corporate environment, I would go in for an interview wearing a suit or at least a nice blouse and a pair of dress pants with maybe heels. Well groomed is the image you need to convey to corporate employers. I worked for a company that was so stuffy that, part of the reason they hired me was because I interviewed in a nice suit. That and I passed their extensive 2 hours interview test and process. I worked my butt off there but, once I started working there, I wore dress pants and a nice blouse or casually dressy shirt since that was the attire of everyone else in the company. There were people who could get away with wearing shorts or jeans too but, not me since I was the Administrative Assistant at the front desk and was therefore highly visible. So, they wanted me to wear a suit every day. I simply can't afford to purchase a suit for every work day so, I asked them if they were willing to give me a one time wardrobe allowance to purchase the suits that they insisted I wear. They said they just assumed that that was how I was going to dress when I came in for the interview. The thing is, I never wore anything inappropriate for business attire in that environment. They refused my request for a wardrobe allowance. I quit after only 9 weeks of employment there because of that and other very strict ways they treated me as opposed to everyone else in the company. I was the only person they treated so strictly. When I say I worked my butt off, I got 2 or more years of work and data input into their company database in less than a month that I was there. This was work that they tried to get out of many other assistants before me and couldn't get it done with any sort of quickness. They should have been kissing my butt instead of criticizing me for my lack of a suit for every day, the tampons in my desk drawer, the way I would accidentally answer the phone good morning in the afternoon or good afternoon in the morning, and for daring to have anything other than a pen and a pencil on my desk.
So, I would love to work for you!
BTW...my job that I got after that one, which I will have been at for 6 years on August 5th, doesn't care what I wear as long as it is a shirt of any sort and and bottoms of any sort. Shorts, jeans, blouses, t-shirts. Whatever. I like it!

Guess it depends on the atmosphere of your store.
If it's more casual and laid back then you might
prefer to opt for someone who has a real personality.
Clothes only say so much about a person.
It's the person inside the clothes that count.
And not everyone has the money for good work clothes.
If you really like the person you could hire them
and then buy the clothes you want them to wear
at your store.
That would put you in control.

In a business such as yours, I wouldn't think the style of dress should matter so much as being clean. Good hygene reflects so much about a person. Beyond that, working in the public, personality should be a top priority. A person that is friendly and kind no matter what sort of day he/she is having or how busy the store is, is worth their weight in gold for the boss...or should be. In this line of work, I feel the personal interview should be more important than the resume itself. In the interview, I think you should stress to the person just how important it is to leave personal issues at home entirely. A smile should be their uniform.

i know this because I have worked in a store for 15 years. When I got hired, I got hired on my personality alone....I had never worked at such a job before. I always had done other types of work. I learned the job itself in time but the friendly personality made customers very forgiving toward mistakes and struggle to learn the ropes. On the other hand, I've seen workers with many years experience get hired and because they are grumpy often or gossipy...many customers will not come in on their shift. They do the job itself well but their personalities can be a real turn off to customers and bad for business.

i do think the employees you want to hire who should wear some clothes which suit the atmosphere of the shop.because it will really offer a good feel for them.if they are really hippy they will like to stay there for longer than usual,(it is better that your emplyees are hippy too,and know a lot of things about hippy, the life style ,the unique culture of hippy ,etc...),if your employees would like to talk with them more,to tell people some interesting historical news about hippy,to make a special patty occasionally with your customers. you have mentioned that you shop is located in the collage town,i am quite sure that the university students will like it and visit your shop for often. the party would not cost a lot,it would really effictive and attractive for all of your customers.
so, if i am running a hippy style shop like yours,i would like to urge my employees to dress some clothes which fit the atmosphere.

I would love to work with you! :) I wish I had my own shop, it's on of my goals. :)
I don't really think it should matter what you look like but it does. For a shop like yours, obviously people have more freedom to maybe let their tattoos show or let their long hair down which is great! But for a corporate job it wouldn't fly no matter how qualified or smart the person is.

I think that the proper look would depend onthe type]
of job. In an office I suppose you would have to wear
a suit, but in the library where I worked we wore slacks or jeans and t shirts or skirts and t shirts. very casual. I imagine
coming to apply for a job with you we can be casual and wear
whatever is comfortable. I do feel it should not make a difference and yes I would love to work with you.lol.

Personally, I feel that it all comes down to what type a job a person is out there applying for. You would not go in looking like a million bucks to work in a Restaurant would you? Even most stores, you know you would not have to dress up as much as like working in an office, so you dress for the job you are applying for. At the same time if you are applying for an Office or Managerial position you would not wear your everyday jeans and a T-shirt either.
Overall, I think you have some Great views here. And if I was one hiring someone for a company I owned, or managed, I would want someone with a Great personality who in turn dressed like someone I would want working there. If they cannot put on a Good impression even dress wise at the first interview, just imagine what type of employee you could have working for you in the future.

Hello Doll
I do believe to apply for a job you must consider the job
and dress accordingly..If you are appling for a construction job
you don't go in a mini skirt and heels just as if you are appling
to cook you don't walk in with filty clothing and uncombed hair.
For safety many times we much dress properly.
For your store they would be no reason to have a dress code.

I have never really applied for a regular job except once when I accompanied a friend who was going to take an exam to qualify for the job. I sat with a group of people while they lectured and later we were asked to take a test. Obviously, I did better than the rest because the General Manager told me that he would personally train me which was quite flattering so, I decided to give it a try. It didn't work out. The only other times I apply for a job is as a singer.

Manner of dressing, of course, among others, is a consideration for one to get a job. Generally, a confident looking, neatly dressed, well mannered with good body language, relatively learned person gets the job, subject to vacancy. But one pretty well knows these considerations do not apply for all jobs. Each category of job requires different disciplines. For example, job of a mechanic, job of a sweeper, job of a clerk and job of a high official! Therefore, the look and action differ from job to job.

I will come and work for you! I use to work at a store just like your in Long Beach,MS. Until Katrina came and took it! I had alot of fun in that store, I met alot of cool people, and got to listen to great music all day. It didn't feel like work to me cause the atmosphere was so laid back. I got to merchandise the store, talk to people in Gautamala that made our hammocks make sure orders where being made. I did alot in that store and it is sadly missed. I believe in making a difference, without change where would this world be!!!
