My nose exploded

I am the proud possessor of a larger than typical nose. Think Gerard Depardieu crossed with an ant eater! Tonight I was sitting here when my nose started to drip blood. Kleenex to the rescue and I now have a tissue plug inserted in my left nostril. I am hoping that all will be well now. Do you get nose bleeds? How do you deal with them?

I don't but my middle daughter used to get them a lot, mostly when it was either very hot or very cold. The only way we could deal with them was to let her sit holding tissue with her head forward. This often went on for five minutes or more but never the ten minutes I was advised to wait before taking her to hospital. My mum used to say a nosebleed was a way of keeping your lood pressure down so maybe you were getting stressed.

Talking to yourself again then? You know it can be seen as slightly odd, talking to yourself Sundays only that is.

I stuffed tissue up my nose and held it at a slight angle for a few minutes and it stopped Nanna. But I have done the head forward thing too in the past. Both work. It's excitement. I know that I am only 48 hours from speaking to my favourite sunday evening person!!

I used to get them alot as a kid and my mom would have me sit back on the chair with a tissue and pinch my nose closed tilt my head back and have me put ice over the bridge of it. The cold will stop it give it about 10 to 15 minutes of doing this then try lifting your head upright again and if it's still bleeding continue tilting your head back with the ice on it-it should stop eventually.

I did something like that only without the ice. It stopped quite quickly than goodness. But thank you for the tip. I shall remember it for next time.

I never get nosebleeds thank goodness. My motherinlaw just had a major one but she is 86. I hope I never do get nosebleeds because I do not think I would enjoy having them at all. I hope yours will be fine and you will not have to continue with kleenex in your nose indefinitely.

I used to get nose bleeds because of my blood pressure or having a cold. But now I don't get them very often thankfully..might want to have your blood pressure checked out.

Oh,Sorry to hear that. Has it ever happened while you were asleep? My husband gets nose bleeds in his sleep ocassionally. I bet that it is dreadful when you get a cold or sinus infection. When you sneeze good and hard will it trigger a nose bleed?
@p1kef1sh (45681)
27 Jul 08
I have had them in my sleep, but not for years. Last time was in an hotel!! But blowing my nose hard can set a bleed off. I'll survive I expect. LOL.

I had my BP checked not long ago Becky. It's not that. I have thinner than usual skin in my left nostril and a blood vessel pops ocasionally.

I don't get noseb bleeds that often, only when I have a bad cold, and I've blown my nose a few too many times. Usually when it starts bleeding it means there's not that much left in there to get rid of, and my cold is almost gone.

i cant remember when the last time i had nose bleed..but my son always had when he was still a kid..what i do was i let him sat and with head inclined up and i hold his nose for a minute or so..then after that i let him wash his face on cold water..and thats it..gone!!im not using any cotton or a tissue or whatever to just put inside his nostrils...but i used it only for the mess...its what the doctor had instructed me to do so when that happens to my child..and if it still bleed after the initial first aid then i had to rush him to the hospital..but luckily it never reached to that extent..ever..

I've never had a bad nosebleed, but my Mom has. Hers can last 20 to 30 minutes, making the entire house smell like blood! She got white as a ghost last time and felt faint. She was told to start using Ocean nasal spray (OTC) daily to help keep her nasal passages from drying out. The ENT was going to cauterize her nose, but he said he saw too many places needing cauterzed. He told her that when she gets one, make a roll out of gauze, soak it with Afrin Nasal Spray and insert it into the nostril. He said he didn't normally recommend Afrin, but that it would stop the nose bleed. It works. Using the Ocean keeps them at bay most of the time, too. Hope yo feel better!

i have rarely had a nose bleed and they weren't much. BUT once a got a nosebleed in the middle of a final exam and it ran heavily covering me in blood. i was shocked and then horrified because i was taking a test that was timed. but the blood wouldn't stop so i went up to the teacher and asked if i could go to the bathroom because i had a bloody nose. she looked at me and said yes. ( i was afraid she might think it was a plan to cheat on the test.) so i went to the girls room and washed myself and held a towel to my nose til it got better. i went to finish the test but time was soon up and my test was incomplete. :( i don't remember what i got on the test. i don't remember it hurting me. but of all times. i never had a nose bleed like that again.

Ha ha..sounded funny the way you described your nose.. I only bleeded like once or twice in my life,by the nose I mean... and it wasn't a bad bleeding, it wasn't dripping out or something.. But I do know people who bleed sometimes,my cousin used to have that problem when we were little,I don't know the exact cause but I know that you should lay down, and keep the ..err was it left or right arm(?) up and keep your head on the back as much as possible,so the nose is up in the air:)) and use tissue if necessary.. it should pass in a few minutes...

I am prone to nosebleeds. I have a tiny weeny little nose. I don't know whether a big or small nose is worse. Small noses get blocked easier but, I assume, big noses hold more and, therefore, more comes out at a time. As I am fairly used to having nose bleeds, I tend to treat them the same way I would a runny nose. I have been known to do what you have done when the bleed seems to be going on forever. There is very little one can do about such a simple ailment. Sit still, let it come out and don't get blood everywhere. It doesn't matter too much whether you put your head up or down or sideways. It may be possible to choke if you put your head up but, as you are a grown up, you're not likely to because you'll put your head down again.

I'm glad it has passed. Cleaning clothes is always a problem. My mum always used salt water to get blood out of things. You can get all sorts of stain removey things nowadays but salt is cheaper and probably better than all of them. I have a slight advantage that my favourite colour is purple and, while wearing dark shades, it doesn't tend to be so noticeable if it hasn't come out.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

The good news is that it has cleared up now Pumpkin. The main problem, apart from a head full of blood, is the need to wash your clothes when they sneak up on you unexpected.

I don't get nose bleeds. Did you know that if your nose runs and your feet smell, then that means you were built upside down. It's true.
