Are you a freecycler?

In England we have websites run by local councils designed to keep items out of landfills that would still be of use to someone else. For example, tv's, clothing, furniture and I even once got a car. You can offer anything you like provided you don't ask for any money for it. It is a great way of getting rid of your unwated items and also obtaining items that would cost you money if bought brand new! I was wondering if anybody else has a simular website running in their country?

I am a member of freecycle and also several barter/sell type groups. Just last Sunday I picked up 20 osed drop ceiling tiles that I need for my camper. I did have to drive a bit out of my way to get them which would have seemed counter productive considering the gas we burned BUT we stopped for groceries on the way back and stocked up so it saved me two grocery trips worth of gas in the end!

This sounds like quite the good idea! I haven't heard of such a service around where I live, but it would certainly solve the trash problem around our area. There are many people living in our neighborhood who dump their trash (some perfectly good sofas, TVs and microwaves) into our street. This is quite annoying since the "trash" ends up taking over parking space. If such a service were running, it would not only save us some cash, it'd also help clean up the streets.

Hi ya movicont That sounds terrible that people would do such a thing. Maybe you could go to your local authorities and see if they kick start a website for you. Even if I had stuff I wanted to get rid of that was still usable I would give it to charity rather than dump it on the street!! Thanks for the response

Hi Hambug, It is good to hear such a free site, helping in frugal living, clearly a good way to get the unwanted items disposed.. But there is no such thing, in India, i suppose..Take care friend.

Hi there 's' Firstly, you are forgiven for calling my 'hambug' It's a shame you don't have anything like that in India, I think it is important in every country, maybe you should start one up yourself! Thanks for your response.

Yes, I am a Freecycler. I have been for a few years now and it is amazing what all I have gotten from Freecycle. I got a toddler bed, a baby swing, some room decorations, a cell phone, and a television. I have given away a microwave, a baby crib, some toys, some clothing, and much more. I love Freecycle. If you don't belong you should join. Have a great day and happy my Lotting!!!

This website is very cool. I wish we have one in our local area. The one great thing about this is that it minimize garbage dump site problems. And another good thing is it rid many of your unwanted things in your garage. It help others too. Great!

My dad is signed up for that in our area! It's awesome! We've gotten a lot of things from that like an electric piano, compost bins, and books! I like using it because that's one less thing being sent to a land fill and plus, you don't have to pay money for that!

Hi there ChemicalCara Yea it is a good thing about freecycle is that you don't have to go anywhere to get rid of your stuff as people come and pick your stuff up from you without having to go anywhere so you are saving on gas and wear to your shoes!! Thank you for responding

Yes,there are regional freecycle websites. I've put stuff on freecycle several times. I've given away a couch (near perefct condition), a cherry wood dining room table and chairs, and a toddler bed. Probably more stuff I can't think of. I'm ready to unload a byunch of framed artwork. I know I could put sell it on Ebay or Craigslist, but sometimes it's just easier to do it on Freecycle if you want to get rid of something quickly. It feels so great to clear out some of the clutter, while helping someone at the same time.

Hi there awonderfullife Yes freecycle is great for decluttering. I do find a problem with freecyclers sometimes though not the site but the people that use it. For example sometimes people say they will come and pick something up and they don't come that is one of my pet hates. Another one is people not posting a message to say the item has gone and you are still waiting to see if you were lucky enough to get the item! My final gripe is we often get people asking for xbox 360's would you believe. Now it I had a 'spare' one I would definately try and sell it not put it on freecycle. Do you also find these problems? I have made some good friends on there though, it seems to bring people together! Thank you for your response and happy freecycling!!

Hi there Scorpionok We do have some swaping sites here too that are also successful. The freecycle site works like this;- I have an item that I no longer want like a tv, sofa, car etc so I post a message on the site saying 'Offered tv, sofa, car etc' with a short description. Someone sees this message and wants the item, they contact me and arrange to come and pick it up. Or I see a message that says 'Offered tv, sofa, car etc' and I need it so I contact them and then pick it up. So I can get rid of my unwanted items and also pick things up that I need all for free! Hope this helps and thanks for responding
