How to optimize HTML Page load time?

My site takes some time to load, and i need to optimize the html, but have no idea where to start. The page will load, the header, but then there is a delay of a second or a few seconds before the whole of the page loads, so i assume it has something to do with the HTML. At the moment is there no content on the main part of the page. When i add content the same thing happens with the page, it doesn't get too much slower (although it obviously does since there are more images/text so more to download) but i don't think this is the main cause of the problem.
