When Did You Start Brushing your Baby's Teeth?

From birth until 6 months old, I only used a soft cloth to clean my baby's gums, tongue and tiny teeth because his gums were very sensitive. On the seventh month, i tried the finger toothbrush..made his gums bleed a little so I went back to the soft cloth.. Now that he's 10 months, the dentist gave me still a soft cloth but with a non-flouride toothpaste... How old was your baby/kid when you started using a non- flouride toothpaste and toothbrush?

My baby is 19months old and I have not started brushing her teeth with tooth brush yet, I use my finger to clean her teeth. I will surely start using regular brush from her second birthday onwards, I am afraid she might consume the paste i.e the reason I am waiting for some more days.

You can use a non fluoride tooth gel that is safe to swallow.

yeah, Silly chick is right...You can buy a non-fluoride toothpaste for the baby and the dentist said that it's safe to use for babies. It wouldn't make them sick or something even if they ate it or swallowed it.. Best to check with your local dentist what brand of toothpaste has no fluoride in it...

When my son was 3 months old I started using the finger brush on his gums, and he actually enjoyed it. He didn't have any teeth until he was 10 months old, and I continued with the finger brush for a while longer. When his teeth got bigger I felt like it wasn't doing a good job anymore. Around 14 months is when I started having him stand at the bathroom sink to brush his teeth, and I started using a regular brush with non-fluoride training toothpaste, which is like a gel. He really enjoys it (most days) which I'm glad for. I think the earlier you start to develop the habit the easier it will be to maintain.

and the earlier we start cleaning their whole mouth, helps to fight bad bacterias too..which as i found out, bacterias in the mouth can even lead to sore throat and inflamed tonsils.. thanks, sillychick

hi, ayessa..The dentist said, its still okay to use a soft cloth instead of a soft finger brush..mine has very sensitive gums so I dont use the finger toothbrush..It's better to use cloth than not cleaning the mouth..Bacteria will thrive and will cause mouth sores or worst tooth decay...thanks..

its better to start brushing your babies/children teeth when the baby/child turns 3y.o because that's also the time the baby/child can learn his toilet training because he is starting to learn things and to do simple things as that.:) oxboo23xo

From birth to about 8 months I used a soft clothe like you said. Once he started getting 4 teeth in around 9 months I would let him use a tooth brush with just water on it I let him start using tooth paste around 15 months old and now he loves to brush his teeth. He begs for me to let him brush his teeth. He tells me "teeth please" and he is 2 yrs old.
