Do you feel awkward to see intimate stuff on TV in front of your parents?

You are watching your favourite TV serial or a movie in your house with your parents and all of a sudden you are confronted with a romantic scene in which the actors are engaged in an intimate scene, what would you do? I feel very embarrassed when such things happen and I don't know how to react. Sometimes I just change the channel or just walk out of the room. How do you react in such a case?

It's too awkward. Now-a-days I am skeptical about watching movies with my parents. I always make it a point to see the certification about the movie before I sit down to watch the movie with my parents.

True, I think both parents and kids get embarrased-we like watching the TV with the kids in the evening, but sometimes some of these soaps are very sexually explicitly, me i like interjecting some off topcs when such scenes appear-but truely, we all get embarrassed.

Yeah, it's kinda mutual embarrassment! Can't help it though. :)

I feel awkward in front of both my parents. Especially if the entire family is watching something together.

I have lived by myself for so long and I don't usually watch that stuff on TV, so it's not a problem with me. When I was a kid, especially a teenager, I would get real embarrassed and look away or walk out of the room. My mom was one that liked romantic stuff on TV and enjoyed those kinds of shows. Now, though, I can watch what I want when I want and I don't really come across those things that much.

When we sit down to watch somethings, we can't predict when the scene will come or how intimate will it be. We have to take it as it comes and be prepared for the embarrassment or to run out of the room! Actually as a teenager one doesn't know quite how to react to these situations. What say?

Hey, nice, you are the tough sort. But, I get very embarrassed and don't understand what to do. Sometimes, I go out of the room or just switch channels.

Yeah I would feel awkward. But whenever we watch Hollywood action movies or action tv series, it is presupposed that some intimate stuff would happen. I don't change the channel. I just let the scene pass. But if my Paps happen to have the remote in his hand, he would switch the channel.

Hey, that proves the point that the feeling of embarrassment is mutual, both child and parent feel the same way. Hey, that's a revelation! And I thought it's just us! :)

Well I never really watched tv with my parents but so its less likely to be in that situation. But if I will be in that kind of situation i also don't know what to do.. i might feel awkward but i think its best not to react or walk out of the room that would just make the situation more awkward.

I would be embarrassed with my parents and used to be but the situation does not arise now. However, I have teenage children so am embarrassed when it happens with them around. I tend to just ignore it though as don't want to make too much of a fuss. Unless the program/film is rated 18 it should not be too bad or last too long. I think children these days have grown up with so much of it around on the television that it hardly affects them at all. It is, after all, quite a natural act and families used to all live in the same room or small house and know exactly what was going on!!

Yeah, you're right but there still is a highly regarded relation between a child and his parents. He/she looks up to them as a role model and feeling uneasy at those times (intimate scenes) is very likely even if you share a good rapport with your parents. What do you think?

I 32 years old now so seeing stuff like that in front of my parents does not bother me but I always wonder what my 12 year old son is thinking when it comes on. Alot of times he just looks away as I think he is embrrassed.

Yeah, on being a parent I think you kinda reflect back on your childhood days and remember all those embarrassing moments! But things were not that spicy on TV those days as they are now. I guess even our parents would feel embarrassed to see such stuff with us.

Hey, that's a good disguise one can take. Just act busy and still watch from the corner of your eye. Great! :)

No I do not, although they think otherwise. But hey, I have grown up. But still it actually depends. If it's just a normal smooch and a kiss, then I do not switch the channel. But if its something more intimate than that, then I just pretend to answer a call or something and walk out of the scene. Although i think my parents wouldn't mind me being there and have a look at it. After all I'm a grown man now..

Hey, nice you think that way. That's the main problem, when watching a movie for the first time you really don't know that will it be a casual kiss or an intimate bedroom scene. This puts me sometimes in two minds - to walk out or not? (Kinda desperate stuff we're discussing here). Anyway! :)

I don't change channel and i would keep watching except my parents change the channel.I think you shouldn't feel awkward to this,it's normal. If you change channel that means you want to cover some things, you should face it with a right mind.

That's the point. There's mutual embarrassment! I guess, the parents are as embarrassed as we are. So, it's the right thing to switch channel and get rid of the embarrassing situation, what say?

Yeah, walking out sure is one of the excuses, but I think it's kinda coward behaviour. What else can one do?

Yes, you've said the exact thing. I think this feeling goes on in every teenagers mind. They don't want their parents to know that their child likes to watch such stuff. Yes, surely it's a catch22 situation - can't sit and watch it nor switch channels. I guess what parents think about such teenager's behaviour.

I definitely feel awkward if this happens, but most the time I don't really watch tv with my parents. But most likely in this situation I would just sit there and hope that it doesn't last too long! I know when I was younger and me and my mom would watch movies together, if there was a part that was like this in any way my mom would tell me to cover my eyes and then she would tell me when I could look again. But that was not over a kiss or something.. that stuff doesn't bother me at all.

Yeah, live the moment and hope the thing vanishes as soon as possible from your eyesight. I guess, in such situations even a minute seems like an hour and you're hoping for the scene to end. But, sometimes it goes on and on and it's very embarrassing! :)

I bet. I just keep wishing that the scene get over fast but when in such a situation the normally small scene seems to go on and on till eternity.

I also try doing such funny distracting stuff but in vain. Infact, I think it makes our discomfort more evident and imagine if our elders were to ignore us completely. That would be more of an embarrassment.

LOL well if the scene wasparticularly hot ,then I well may have to consider getting up and putting the kettle on,and leave Mum to it!but she would be glued in ,and calling me saying OHHH COME LOOK AT THIS!lol but no seriously I would find it a little bit toe curling yes,but I would be mad that I had to miss the good bits myself!

Yeah, kinda agree with you completely but I think feeling awkward is natural for most of us and will surely subside when we mature in life. I guess, then it will be the turn of our younger generation to feel awkward then. Kind of, will go on and on down the generations

YES! I cannot stand watching intimate scenes with my parents. It just feels so awkward especially because there's usually a comment from them that comes with watching it. I just feel like I'm being watched for my reactions and i do not like it at all.to avoid such situation, i just try not to watch too many movies or shows with my parents, lol.

Yeah, exactly when the scene is on, many things go on in my mind and I can't concentrate on the scene at all. I feel I am under a microscope with my parents trying to see my reaction (even if they aren't). Exactly the same reaction as yours. Yeah, watching movies with friends is the best solution. Thanks. Bye :)

Switching channels is one of the best options now with the remote being a very handy tool. The problem comes if the remote is not working and you are unable to switch the channel. You have to walk up to the TV and change the channel or just switch it off and walk out of the room.

Switching channels is a good idea, but that would make it very clear to the others that you are at discomfort. Also, you can't do it when your entire family is watching the film or serial. I sometimes try and change channels giving justification about what an important sporting event is going on and I need to check out the scores.
