How does your phone respond to being full? Mine occasionally decides to complete lock up and freeze, and theres absolutely nothing i can do apart from pull the battery out.
My phone must be weak or something... because everyone else i know their phone just says, memory full please delete some crap, but they dont mess up.
What about your phone? Don't you just find it annoying you're having to pull the back off once again to reset your phone?

I think your phone has a system problem or program problem, anything that hangs like that must mean that it's a factory defect or something. Is it a new phone or an old one? Has it always been like this ever since you got the unit?
I have been through several types of phone and I have yet to get that problem *knock on wood*..
Anyways, mine would just say it's full. Another phone would even switch from SIM to phone memory or vice versa if the space allotted is full.
What phone unit have you got? and how long have you had it?

Let's see... I use my phone sort of as a journal, heh, making entries out of multimedia messages and saving them as drafts. I didn't even think there could be a limit on how many you can save. So, after my 50th entry, I went to make another one, and spent quite a bit of time on it... As I hit save, it told me MEMORY FULL and completely erased my entire entry! I was MAD!
Mine's never frozen like that before...
