this was emailed to me by my sister-in-law.
A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke which she put into the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. She died on Wednesday.
The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. This was traced to the can of coke she drank from, not using a glass. Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.
Rat urine contains toxic and deadly substances. It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part of soda cans before drinking out of them. The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.
A study at NYCU showed that the tops of soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e).. full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.
i totally agree with this. even before i got this email. it has been our practice to wash the top of the can, sodas or canned food, before opening it or drinking from it. though, i never thought that it was dirty before it even got to the supermarket because i used to believe that this manufacturers would handle storage of their products, especially food products, with utmost care.
so, fellow mylotters please take note of this. from now, wash the top of the cans before using them. it wont take you a minute to do that.

that's what i hope to achieve that's why i started this discussion. it's such a waste to die like that. oh and may i also add that even if you wont be drinking straight from the can i still think it should be washed before opening. some of those dried rat urine may be poured into the glass with the soda. in other words always wash the can before opening it.

Thanks for the information. From now on I will always
remember to wash the cans of soda before drinking. Or
not to drink straight from the can anymore. I will
spread this information to my relatives and to every
one I know.
