Alternative medicine,Herbs,and the FDA

Medical marijuana has been approved in some states for people who have certain illness or disease. I know several people who have used it for nausea associated with cancer,HIV,and side effects from legal drugs used to treat various conditions. I think we have a right as ADULTS to make our own decisions about what we take into our bodies. Why is it that 38 people die or have some side effect from ephedra and it is taken off the market,yet we have hundreds of thousands of people dying from tobacco and alcohol and they remain legal. Why do we in the western world treat people after they become ill as opposed to maintaining health using modalities that promote well being? How is it okay to have a medicine used to treat one problem yet causes side effects much worse than the original reason for which it prescribed? Why don't we have the choice to of using natural means as opposed to the medical field when it comes to the insurance policies(which we pay for dearly)these days? I have my own ideas about why...........would love to hear yours!
