Calling all composers and songwriters

Greetings, all. I'm just wondering how many amongst us are composers or songwriters. Typically, what sort of motions do you go through when writing music? Is it a matter of simply writing down what you have in your head? Or, do you just try playing around on your instrument until you find something to work with?
What about lyrical content? Do you spend a lot of time writing lyrics? Or do you simply just write words down and like what you see right away?
Perhaps there's something I've missed. For listeners and performers out there, what are some of the most important elements you look for in music? Melody? Key? Style? Lyrical content?

I spend a lot of time in my youth writing lyrics and music: so I can say there's not only one way to do it. Sometimes I was in love with a girl and words and music naturally flew from my mind.
Sometimes I listened to a musical theme somewhere and, getting busy about it, a song was born.
Sometimes I owned a lyric and I had to adapt it to music, or else I composed the music and had to input a lyric abiding metrical rules.
Melody, Key, Style, Lyrical content: all necessary ingredients, however, from experience, the most important thing is only in this word: inspiration.
Good luck!
