My little girls have been bugging me to cook chicken hearts and gizzards.
So I bought some and this is basically how I cook them.
Since gizzards can be tough, I boil them in salt, pepper, paprika for about 1 1/12 to 2 hours.
Drain them and let them cool down. Them dredge them in floor and more paprika.
Deep fry them until golden brown.
Then I will have to get my share or go without.
First thing they say is... "You better not eat any of the hearts!"
Which is okay because I like the gizzards, not the hearts. Unless they are cut up in a nice cornbread dressing (thanksgiving style).

I love chicken hearts, livers and gizzards. The heart actually taste nice, whether you cook it simple (like pan fry) or elaborate (in a saucy, fancy meal). One good thing about it is, because of its size, you really don't need to cut them up...they're already in "bite size" form. The heart has a nice texture, a bit chewy but not tough chewy, if you know what I mean. And it easily absorbs the flavour of the dish if you would cook it with a saucy base. I would love you to try them (just ask your girls for one tiny piece so you can give it a try) and let me know what your comments will be about them. I'm telling you, if you can eat the gizzards, I'm sure you'll have no problem liking the hearts as well.

I can bare a couple pieces of heart, but if a gizzard is in sight. I'm all over it.

We like both hearts and gizzards I grew up on them. I don't like the liver though. I fix mine pretty much the same way you do yours. simmer them until nice and tender. cool them dredge them in flour with sage, thyme and rosemary. The kids are usually waiting for them too. It's been a while since I fixed them. I'll have to get some next time I'm at the store.

In about 10 minutes I will be getting mine ready for the fryer.
As for liver, I hate it with a passion. It should be banned from all taste buds. If I had a no liver sign, I would walk the neighborhood with it.

Wow! Mylot is brilliant for introducing us to new ideas. I am glad you accepted me as a friend so that I can keep up with your discussions - thanks for commenting on mine too by the way. My children would run a mile from chicken gizzards and hearts. The insides of any animal for that matter. I am not very keen myself although was supposed to eat liver when pregnant for the iron content. I thought tripe was for dogs!! LOL

Yea, where I grew up in the Carolina's, we ate them alot. Gizzards rank up there as a favorite of mine.
If done, properly they are quite enjoyable.

This sounds crazy to me!! i have never heard of people eating chickens hearts or gizzards, i can't believe your kids love them! i must admit probably not alot different from the chicken nuggets i buy from the supermarket for my son... maybe even healthier? I just couldn't do it! I couldn't prepare hearts, brains or gizzards and then cook them in my DEEP FRYER !! i hate cooking crumbed things in their beacuse of all the stray crumbs that stay in the fat!

I will admit they are delicious.
However they do not taste like nuggets, not even close.
They are in a league of their own.

There are animal hormone in chicken heart, so i advice you not let the kid take too much. Some time I bought chicken heart from dining room of my college. I feeled that heart accelerated somewhat and the head skin was cool, then i recalled my mother's advice that don't eat animal organs too much.

That for the advice. I have never experienced those symptoms. Interesting, did this happen everytime you ate them?

I'm cooking some right now actually. They watched me the whole time. Already planning to get early bites.
They want to eat some as soon as the first batch is done.
They are all mad becasue I told them they can have some once all are finished.
