Do you own your house or rent?

I have always heard that it is better to own than to rent but I know I lot of people who rent. I, myself own my house plus another that I rent out. To me if I am going to live somewhere I might as well make payments towards owning it and not throwing away money by renting. Curious to what others think

I own my personal home and I also own investment properties both single family and multifamily. I plan on buying some small commercial properties at some point.
I feel exactly the same way that you do. As of lately real estate in my state and all over the US for that matter, have taken a depreciation hit. The largest since the Great Depression in some area's. But even with this being the case, from an investment point of view there is nothing else that will yield a higher return. So it just makes money sense. I typically buy with the intent of buying and holding for 3-5 years minimum, before I will sell. I will normally take profit and do a tax exchange on another property so that I don't have to pay the capital gains tax and still keep my portfolio growing. Right now is the perfect time to get into real estate investing if you have funds to invest in the market. At some point the market has to turn around and those that bought low will make a fortune if they can afford to stay afloat.

Sounds like you have a plan, stick to it and it can make a huge difference in your asset base and portfolio. Thats how I started. As a result I was able to payoff all of my debt a few years ago, except my mortgages. I didn't pay those off because they pay their own way. My goal was to leave my corporate job by age 40. I quit my job for my 40th birthday present to me. I started my own business and live a pretty worry free life when it comes to finances.

Excellent advice. As mentioned, I own my own and own one rental property at this current time. My rental is a two-family. I have a renter in one side and am finishing rehabbing the other side. Once finished I will get a renter in that side, as well. The one renter's rent pays all of my bills on the house, so the other rent will be all profit. I plan to put it up for sale when I have two renters. For what I paid and the minimal amount of money put in, I can make around 50K by selling cheap and up to 60-70K if it sells at or above market.

My husband and I own our home plus another one next door that we rent to my daughter and her fiance. Before moving here we owned our home up north and made a huge profit when we sold because the market was very strong. I have always felt that renting was throwing money away and I think that everyone who possibly can should own their own home. There are many programs available for first time homeowners that will help with the down payment and closing costs.

Agreed. If you are going to spend money on a house it might as well be one that you can own and sell for a profit down the road. Now I know some can't do that right away, but I feel that should be the goal of any one living in a house...to one day own that house.

You would be suprised that many people do not think like that. Alot of people rent and just throw money away

Yes is always better to own a house than to rent a house. i know this because i now don't have a own house and i am in rent house now and i am planning to own in coming future. I think if you own a house it is like accomplishing all the dreams.

Me and my parents used to live in a small trailer that they owned but they were renting the land from our old neighbor, she was a nice lady but it was ridiculous to pay so much for rent, now we live in a bigger double wide on like three acres of land and my parents own it,and I agree it is definitely better to own a house than it is to rent one.

there is some good points for one and for others.
if you are owner of your house and something happens to her you is the responsible and should do something to fix the mistake.
and if you aren't the owner, your house is rented, and something happens like broken conduit you just need call the responsible for the house and him should fix it.
it is obviously isn't exactly like i say have somethings the owner of the rented house aren't the responsible for the things that have happening but i believe you have understand what i'm trying to say xD
i'm becoming confused with myself
thanks, Scorpionok

You had me for a bit but then you had me becoming confused, too. I think I know where you are coming from, though. Thanks
