I've gained so much weight, I can't stand myself! I'd gotten within about 7 pounds of my goal, then I became very ill, then very depressed, and for the past 6 months or so, I've been growing. I want emotional and spiritual growth, but this big body has to go! We all know the diet-and-exercise thing, but is there a really fast way, at least, to start? I just can't bully myself into a pound or two a week again, without a quick start to get me going. I hate this!!!!!

Hi Cobra I'm in the same boat. I need to drop at least 30 pounds. I'm 58 and have been through menopause. I have thyroid problems and a list of other problems that nobody wants to hear about. The thing is that diets don't work. If you lose the weight and then start eating the things you cut out for a while, the weight comes back. It's very depressing. I have to take a lot of medications, so even though I don't over eat or snack, I still don't lose weight. They recently said that the low carb diet seems to be the most effective. Try cutting down on breads, potatoes and pastas. Good luck sweetie. leenie

Thanks, Leenie! I hope I can keep up the motivation. I, too, have many, many medical problems, and I could quite easily hide behind the excuse that weight gain is a side-effect of several of the things I have to take each day. I'm going to do this!!!! If I could quit smoking last Halloween, I should be able to do anything!

Cobra, I applaud you. And maybe I should join you in this endeavor. I quit smoking also in 1997. Cold turkey. It felt great!! In the past I usually went on weight watchers. I was always successfull. A year ago last Jan. I tried it again. I lost 11 pounds and couldn't get beyond that. I didn't like their new system. The 1200 calories a day is a good idea. My biggest draw back is I can't exercise or walk because of my back. But I'm not going to give up. If I lose 30 pounds I'm sure that will relieve a lot of my pain. Well, tomorrows a new day. We'll see what happens. Good luck girl!! lets keep in touch. leenie

See -- myLotters are really great people! Thanks. Don't lose touch with me, either. Our difficulties are very similar, so we should back each other up!

Aww hun I feel your pain! To be honest with you though, the quick ways are not the best ways. Usually a quick start just ends up with you gaining more weight and getting fed up and depressed about it. Then it turns into an ugly vicious cycle and it doesn't do you any good finacially, physically or mentally. I lost a lot of weight and am still losing weight simply by cutting my calories down to about 1200 a day. I would eat anything I want to as long as I don't exceed that. Also eating several small meals and snacks a day are a great way to raise your metobolism, and keeps you from going out and splurging on a "diet". You really want to stay away from "fad" diets, diet pills etc. The reason being is that when you do those things and reach your goal you tend to stop and the weight will come back on very quickly. I know how fusterating it can be for you hun, I have been dealing with weight all my life. Don't weigh yourself every day or week, as that tends to make you feel that you aren't doing enough. It's never an easy thing and I will be here for you to talk to and will be more than happy to talk about these things with you and be your support system through this. I hope this helps hun!!

Hi Erilyn I just wanted to congratulate you on your weight loss. You are absolutely right. 1200 calories a day is the magic number. When I was your age I was able to do what you are doing. Now I have so many medical obstacles. But soon I'm going to jump back on the band wagon and go again for my health. I just have to be ready emotionally. Nice to meet you by the way. leenie

Nice to meet you as well leenie! It wasn't easy to do at first, but now I am so used to it that it is natural. I tried to tell my mom that instead of trying all these diets that are unhealthy, to do this. You body needs all different kinds of things to keep it going. She is on a low carb kick along with a LOT of other people but your body does need a certian amount of carbs. Cobra hun, I try lol. I try to always be here for my friends as much as I can!! And as far as Kat goes she has her days. Some days are better than others with her. We have our good days and bad days. Now that I have gone back to work we have a few more good days than bad days, but I take it one day at a time with her. I can't try to look forward to any real future yet. I will get there though. Thank you for asking hun.

Erilyn, you always seem to come through at just the right time. In spite of many medical problems, I'm determined to lose the weight. Again!!!. Just might be leaning on your shoulder along the way. Thanks for the empathy! How's it going with Kat?

I feel for you.... I think it is the worst feeling when you want to loose weight but it is not happening! I too would like to loose a little bit of weight but have not yet got to the point of doing anything about it! Maybe start working on making youself feel good, like wearing your favorite outfit - one that you feel good in, and / or a haircut or facial or something to make you feel beautiful - as if you feel better yourself you may just loose the weight too without noticing it at all Take care!

Good ideas, Mummybec. I know I just have to do it, to do it. It's just so hard because, like cleaning the house, it seems to need to be done again right away! I have clothes in every size from kids' stuff (I'm really small) to 16. My closets are bulging, but I'm afraid to get rid of anything, because it seems I'll be fatter and thinner, and fatter and thinner.

The experience of losing weight is not good. I have the same trouble with you. Someone says losing weight is women's career. But now I think we do that is for our health. I think you could write dowm what you eat every day, let your life disciplinarian and do more housework instead of forcing to do more exercise.

Welcome to myLot, newbie! I'm not sure which I hate more -- exercising or housework. I just know I have to do it! You'rr idea of a food journal just might help me get a good start. Thanks.
