Would you give birth to your baby in a car?

Sounds like something that could only happen in the movies.
But I've heard real life stories about women who went
into labor while sleeping and then woke up in pain.
And on the way to the hospital, they get stuck in traffic
or lost on the highway and the woman ends up trying to have
the baby in the car.
Guess life goes on. Usually works out.
But I've always worried something like that would
happen to me.
My last baby was born C-section and I'm not relishing
the idea of going VBAC. Gives me the creeps just
thinking about it. Lucky me, I live less than a mile
from the hospital.
Anyway, do you think you could manage if you got
stuck in your car trying to have a baby and didn't make it
to the hospital on time?

I know a couple who had their baby at home in bed, although they didn't mean to. This woman had had children before, so she knew she was in labor. She went to the hospital, and they wouldn't even see her. Her doctor wasn't there, and they just told her it was false labor and she needed to go home. She tried to raise a fuss, but they wouldn't let her. So she went home, knowing full well she was in labor. She lied down and tried to sleep. Next thing you know she was waking her husband telling him the baby was coming. He looked and just barely caught the baby before it hit the floor. They called 911 and the operator talked him through how to finish delivering the baby while the ambulance came.
Cool part is, on the birth certificate it lists the dad as the person who delivered.

My husband and I actually went through home birth classes before our first child was born. We really wanted to have her at home, but as the time grew closer, I started to worry about complications. We had a sympathetic doctor who allowed us to follow as much as possible if we wanted to, all the home birth directions we could do at the hospital. All in all, I am glad it was at the hospital because the labor was so long. One of the nurses got in trouble for forcing an IV on me when I refused it because she said it was hospital policy and I had to have it. I told her I didn't have to and she argued and put it in anyway. Next shift my new nurse took it out.

My hospital nurses bullied me too!
They just acted like I was some bystander
in the whole birthing process!
I'm choosing a different hospital next time around!

I don't think there would be much you could do to avoid giving birth in a car if the baby was ready to be born. I've heard a few stories about taxi drivers and hubbies delivering babies en route to hospital. Then, they've had to get the mother and baby to the hospital so that the birth can be finalised properly. It doesn't usually present a problem in the stories I've heard or read, at least. Some labour periods are shorter than others, and if you're unlucky enough to experience a short one, without time to reach the hospital, then I don't feel you have a choice, my friend. Better out than in, as they say!
Brightest Blessings. xx

Isn't it the truth!
At heart, I'm a real trooper, especially
when it comes to my family/child.
I'll share a secret with you.
I was more than willing to go without pain killers
during the labor and just assumed that's how things
were done until the nurse came in and told me I'd
need an epidural. I think the staff knew (even though
I didn't) that the baby was going to be taken out
by C-section.
The pain was bad. That's for sure, before the epidural went in.
But not really though. I managed.
Funny thing, about a week after I got out of the hospital
with my baby, I told hubby how painful things were
before the epidural.
And he stood there with a dumb-founded look on his face,
in shock! He said something like, "I had no idea! You never
made a sound."
Poor guy, he was laying right there next to my hospital bed
during most of the first part of my labor. He slept (cause it
was early AM hours) and I would wake up occasionally, deal with
a birthing pain. And then fall asleep again.
In a pinch, I'm a really strong person. Guess it's a mom trait!
Until I had my daughter, I never knew what a strong person I
could be!
Thank you for your comments.
Always nice to speak with you.

I think you give birth where ever you are when it's time. I would prefer not to give birth in a car. Cripe that would be scary! I am lucky that I got to the hospital and had a safe delivery. I'm not planning any more children- so I'm sure I won't be faced with this :)

My baby having days are over but if I had ever had to give birth in a car the baby may not have survived. I have a pelvic deformity, because of being hit by a car when I was four, that makes it impossible to push out a baby without some outside (forceps) help.
I've done the VBAC twice and that's how the problem with my pelvis was found. You don't know until the moment arrives but things can and do go wrong.

I think if the baby was ready to be born, you wouldn't have any choice in the matter!
I wouldn't opt for it that way, obviously, but honestly, how could you stop it if it were happening? I known horses can stop labor for a time if they want, but I've never known a woman to be able to accomplish that.

I remember when I went thru my childbirth classes. A woman there was expecting her fourth child. We were all shocked that she felt she needed the class. She smiled and said her doctor insisted - since her first three were born before she ever got to the delivery room. LOL The first was born at home. The second was in the car, and the third was in the hospital elevator. I guess you can't always pick where you choose to deliver your baby!

First one didn't want to come out.
They had to induce.
They say lightening never strikes twice in the same place.
Maybe same thing is true about child birth.
Always different each time.

Well if I was in labor and stuck in traffic I guess I'd have no choice but to give birth to my baby in the car!
When I was pregnant with my youngest I worried I could have done just that as I was 9 centimeters dilated by the time my husband and I reached the hospital which is 20 miles away. Fortunately we weren't stuck in traffic and my water didn't break! I waddled LOL into the emergency room and they admitted me immediately!

Would I? If I were to be pregnant, I don't think I'd have much of a choice in the matter because when in labor, the body nor the baby has a choice in the matter. It just happens. I'm sure there's a few that wish they could've made it to the hospital but couldn't. lol When it wants to enter this world NOW... lol... it will!!

It depends really on the situation. If I am about to give birth and can no longer prevent the coming out of the baby then I will. rather than compromise the life of the baby if I keep on preventing on his or her coming out. But I can still control the situation, I'd rather give birth in the hospital where both of us will be safe.

A car is not the ideal place to birth a child, but if you are on the way to the hospital and the baby cannot wait, there are certain things mother nature causes that we cannot prevent.
I suppose one would have to TRY to manage if they had no choice.

Sorry but the baby will choose when it wants to come out regardless where you are!! If it came to it yes I would, surely it would be more painful trying not to push then pushing the baby out!! I would get some to ask all the passerbyers if they are a midwife or doctor!!
I havent been pregnant yet but would to hope that i get to the hospital in time!!

Babies have a mind of their own!
Thankfully! That leaves women very little
to do but to push at the right moment!
Fortunately!

When was about six or seven my aunt went into labor and it was just me and nana at home with her. It was about a twenty minute drive to the hospital and I remember her in a lot of pain with one leg out the window. We were at a red light and everyone let us go by them because they could hear her pain and could see one leg on the dashboard and the other out the window.
We got to the hospital parking lot and she gave birth there. Me and my aunt always talk about it, and about how she was in pain and I could remember me and nana wanting her to go to the hospital and she kept saying wait let me finish cooking this rice. We also laugh about how the nurse showed up in the parking lot too late and my aunt was so mad.

I don't think I would ever go through with it since I'm beyond child-bearing years. But my daughter could have been one of those statistics. She barely made it to the hospital with her first three. The third one she walked in the front door of the hospital (ER) and within 20 minutes she had the baby. The doctor didn't even make it to the hospital. She never even got prepped! And, when her 4th child was about to be born, the doctor told her he was scheduling this child's birth on her last visit. She never had real contractions like most women. She just had an uneasy feeling in her stomach. And when she'd get to the doctor, he would say you are in labor. So, that is what happened with the last one. She went in on Monday and Thursday morning, she was put in the hospital and induced. Within 40 minutes of being induced she had the baby! He said she would never have made it and her husband would have been delivering the child on the road. Lucky for them, she was in the hospital before hand.

Babies have a way of coming into the world on their time schedule and if you are stuck in a car when it happens, what choice would you have? In an elevator, in a store, or whereever it happens, the baby is the one in charge at that moment and you just don't have much of an option other than to just get through it the best you can. Hopefully no one would be shopping while in labor though...but who knows in this crazy world of ours?

hypothetically speaking - since i'm done having children...if it were to come down to this - i really don't think there would be a choice - you can't will your body to wait until you get somewhere more convenient.
i remember that i wanted to have my younger son at home - my husband at that time was a dairy farmer...
he asked me if delivering a baby was anything like pulling a calf
needless to say - i had my baby in the hospital

I wouldn't PURPOSELY give birth in a car ... but I guess if it's on the way there's not much you can do about it! Fortunately, all my four were born in hospital, with plenty of time. (At least our car is a ute, so I could always lie down in the back and have a bit of space ...)
