Is the term "Depression" thrown around too lightly nowadays?

I feel it is. A lot of people I know say they are depressed, and I do not believe them, I am quite old fashioned in that and I believe most of them have nothing to be depressed about. I think a lot of them are simply doing it for the attention.
Not that I deny that there are depressed people, I simply refuse to believe that modern society can create that many. Especially considering there is a whole "emo" culture.
I also cannot believe that depression is hereditary as I have always felt it is up to the person themselves as to whether they want to fix their problem or not.

I think there is a lot of pressures in this world today and because people are so open these days and unfortunaltely so greedy and dishonest in many cases a lot of people are finding it hard to cope with life in general....

Looking at it rationnally though; life has not become harder, in many respectst it has become easier. It is much easier to get jobs in the tertiary sector and standards of living have increased dramatically. If anything there should be less people in a depression because of that.

Well, Physically and Health Wise the World has gotten easy for those who can afford the technology. But Mentally, and emotionally, the world deals with more than it ever has all at once. Pressures people have never had to deal with before in history, we are dealing with now do to the overwhelming information, that is coming at us in many ways - DNatureofDTrain
