There are two ways of putting dreadlocks in your own hair and there is a lot of facts and fiction out there. I have got a certificate for both braiding fake hair into people's own hair and to braid dreadlocks into them so I know a bit on how these things work. First things first; some history! History from the dreadlocks When the English first saw men with dreadlocks they thought it looked horrible. The people wearing their hair this way called them 'locks' because the hair is secured and 'locked' in some way. The English called them 'dreads' because they thought they look dreadfull and should be called dreads. In the end it turned out to become a mixture/compromise and so the name dreadslocks was born. Dreadlocks from own hair Are said to ruin your own hair, and yes it's hard to take them out but it's possible. It can make your hair a lot less soft but there are cases of people being able to get their hair quite nice again, but it's not without risk and shouldn't be thought of lightly. When making a dreadlock the own hair gets backcombed, twisted and secured with green soap (or so I've heard, not to sure about the product). Dreadslocks braided in If you leave them in for not to long a time it will not ruin your own hair, it won't damage it at all. This is what I do for other people, I know a technique to braid them in and they won't slide out or hurt your scalp. This is a great alternative if you want dreads for a shorter period of time. Braiding fake hair is quite the same, only you will het braids and not loose dreads. Facts and fiction 1) You can't wash your hair when you have dreads - Fiction 2) Dreads can hurt your scalp - Fact, but only when not done well 3) Dreads can make your head feel heavy - Fact 4) When you get headlice all dreads need to come off - As far as I know, fact 5) Dreads can tickly - Fact 6) Dreads are not hygenic - False 7) Dreads are a way you can express yourself - Fact 8) Dreads come in a large varity of colours and materials - Fact 9) There are dreads make of hyperallergenic materials - Fact

Hey cyberfluf, you didn't go into taking dreadlocks out.....people think it's a fact that you can only CUT out dreadlocks. There is this product I saw online called the Take Down Remover and it takes out dreadlocks from 1-9 years. Check it out and tell me what you think. thanks.

Thank you for the info on this product, Hairqueen. I must admit I know less about dreadlocks from real human hairt than the braided ones. The fiction about only being able to cut out your dreadlocks is truely out there; it's a good thing you mention it. I never had them myself and I don't make them on other people either. A friend had them once and took them out with some type of goo he made himself. I don't remember all the substances, but I do remember there was green soap in there. Thank you for responding and happy mylotting!
