Are dreams what we want reality to be?

When we have really good dreams, is it our subconcious telling us that this is what our reality should be? I believe this is true because it does give us something to work towards.
What about the bad dreams, are they trying to signify something in life that we are scared of? Usually when I have a bad dream it is because of something that happened recently. Example: when my mom first went into the hospital with a heart attack, I had nightmares about her not coming home and it scared the bejeebees out of me.
I know everyone has dreams and some actually come true. The nightmares are the worst but, sometimes even they come true.
These were just a few questions I have always wondered about and my opinions on them.

but.... you know that our brain is not able to make a difference between the real thinks or the thinks that we just imagine? Make a try! Imagine with a large amount of thinks an experience, like walking on the sand, listen the sea and the fish, smell the taste of the sea, feel the sand under your feet only with your immagination and your body will be relaxed by this exercize ;)

Thank you for your response. :)
If our brain doesn't know imaginary from reality I think there is something wrong with it lol. I mean, we do all our thinking with our brain and we tend to realize what is truth and what is a lie using our brain... So, my question is: Why doesn't our brain know the difference between the two?
