Who can best help the poor?

I know some people think that the people of the US are self centered and do not help the poor. I keep hearing that we should tax the rich to help the poor. We have been doing this for almost 50 years and what do we have to show for the government programs? We have spent Billions (some say into the Trillions) trying to help the poor. We have jobs programs, education help (Head Start, Title I, After School Programs), work programs (VISTA and America Corp), food programs (Hot Lunch and Hot Breakfast in school, Food Stamps, WIC, Commodity Distribution), Health Programs (School Clinics, Free Birth Control, Medicaid and state health Insurance programs, we even have SCHIP that provides health care for Children (to age 26) and their parents) there has even been income redistribution (Earned Income Tax Credit, Aid to Families with Dependent Children - AFDC- , General Welfare) and what has it gotten the poor.? According to the latest Census data the US poor are better off than many lower and middle class people in developed nations around the world. It seems to me that all we are doing is giving then the Fish. We are not teaching them to fish so they can do for them selves. Would they have been better off with no government help?

I do not know how many of you have been in the "poor" class but I have been and as easy as it seems it is not. Funny thing is I realize what the poor recieve monetarily is both not enough and too much. Hows that for a cunundrum? lol
It is not enough because it will not really cover basic needs, cash allowance in my state would not even pay rent let alone any other bills, also our state does not cover parents on any kind of medical. (there are exeptions but they are few) Add to that the fact that the moment you get any kind of job cash is gone! I could go on and on about how this system works but suffice it to say the system is broken.
It is too much because you become dependent on the little that you get and trying to figure out ways to keep it. For example you get offered a good paying job but there is little or no medical, well you can not take it because what if the kids get sick? You have lost your state medical and have none available at work. Plus in some areas it takes so long to get the help people would rather not risk losing what they have.
My take on it all coming from public assistance to nearly completely self sufficient? More than job training poor people need training in finances and credit, and a shot of mentoring from someone who has made it would not hurt either!

I support indexing welfare benefits so that people who are working can get some of the benefits. The more you make the more you pay. In my state if you make $21,000 you get full benefits and at $21,500 you get nothing. This is a problem and discourages working.

I hear what you are saying! We have had a little help through the years, mostly food related. Now my son is 19 and married with a child. He makes decent money for our area over 11 dollars an hour and the other day he and his wife were talking about getting hud!! And griping about losing their foodstamps! I was like what the _____! Are you kidding me, when did he get the idea that the government should pay for his life? My husband has worked all this boys life and we only got help if there was no other choice, till we could get back on our feet. So I am shocked at his attitude and fear for their future. It sickens me truly. I feel there is nothing bad about help while you need it but people try and figure out ways to need it. Like they are entitled to free life. Sad so very sad.

"Would they have been better off with no government help?"
Yes, because government help weakens people by making them dependent without any incentive towards independence and self reliance. The time comes when a person needs to become able to take care of themselves. So far, government programs have not learned to do this.

I have helped on many different Community Volunteer groups to help the poor. One such project was a Christmas Basket that gave food, common household items, and gifts for the family. The group takes all who ask or are referred. Two years ago I was helping to load the baskets and gifts for the families. One lady I helped was very grateful and when I told her that we had extra items that she could go and select some extra gifts was reluctant because someone else might need them. The other one I helped was arguing with the Project Director because her son was not 18 and was receiving his own welfare check and should be considered a separate family. The Director pointed out that he was still living at home and was considered part of the family. The lady continued to argue saying that "He is entitled to it". This is my problem with the government programs. They create a separate group and say you are going to get special treatment. You are entitled to it.

bobmnu,
I call this the 'Don't feed the bears' syndrom. In the National Parks of the USA they have signs warning people to not feed the bears. In fact, all around the world such signs are put up where ever there are dangerous wild animals. The reason is the wild animals will become dependent and expect the food. The problem is when you stop feeding them. Then the wild animals get violent and are likely to hurt those who use to feed them but no longer do. I'm not making this up. This really is the reason for the 'Don't feed the bears' signs.
Hmmm... don't suppose this is a valid analogy to human behavior do you?

The US poor has it very well off compared to other nation's poor. Through all of those government program more people have become poor instead of doing away with the poor. Let us gleam something the our Master taught us, "The poor you will always have with you." Remember what was going on, Mary Magdalene broke the box of perfume and poured it on the Christ, Judas said that we could have sold the perfume and given it to the poor. Even back then their were people that wanted to take from the rich and give to the poor. The Christ wanted some luxery before his sacrifice, Judas could only see money that could in away be taxed.
When was the last time anyone every heard of a government program recieving a cut, except of the military. Government cannot do without, but the taxpayers that pay for all of these programs have to. If there was no government programs would lighten the tax load on the taxpayers. More job could be created because there would be more money avialable to create these jobs. Since people will have more money they would have more money to spend, or save. Spending will create jobs because products have to be made. Saving create loanable money so more small start up businesses could be created. Make sense to me, I wonder why some do not understand it.

Check the Census Report on the poor. There are more poor people owning their homes, own two cars, have more than on colored TV. The overall number of people below poverty remains about the same. Unemployment is below the the 10 year average and family income is up. Today the top 20% pays 95% of the taxes. How much more do you expect them to pay. Before the Bush Tax Cuts a person or small business was getting taxed at a higher rate the more they made. At what point does it pay not to work. If a store owner makes enough to employ his family (Husband, wife, 2 sons and 2 daughters)with one store and wants to expand but learns that by expanding he will double his income and will end up making less money than with one store. He does not open a second store and 6 people do not have a job because it would cost the owner more to open the store than he would make. Under The Bush Tax Cuts he could make a profit and the government would collect more in taxes because there were now 6 more people paying taxes. Tax Cut mean more jobs for people. Check out history and see what happened when JFK, Reagan, Bush, and Bush cut taxes. What happened when taxes were raised.

"Latter" of success? I think you mean ladder, am I right? That said, you tossed this point my way before, then failed to exemplify greater employment as a result of tax breaks to the rich. Employment is worse now than it was 8 years ago, and the dollar is weaker.

I don't think that poor people would have been better off with no government help. What they would have been is starving and destitute on the street. Although your example about giving them fish is true and we do need to teach people how to fish for themselves. In most cases this means making sure colleges and other post secondary educations are available and affordable. However there will always be some people, like me for example I'm in a wheelchair I require $3,000 of medicine per month. I have two jobs but don't make much money and even if I did I need $80,000 minimally to support my survival needs, wheelchair, PCA care, medicines, doctor visits, and so on. As no insurance company will accept me, due to my pre-existing conditions I have to stay on state health insurance until I die. This doesn't mean I am a lazy person, it just means I am a person interested in survival.

I want those people who need help to get it but we are facing people who are third generation welfare. They are taking money from the people who really need it. I would like to see the benefits indexed so that your benefits are slowly reduced as you earn more money. This would help people like you who are working but still struggling with the bills. You could earn more with out losing your benefits.
I have belonged to Community Service groups most of my adult life and these groups have been helping people locally and worldwide for years. I have never seen a person denied help that they needed. I have seen these clubs deny help to people who felt they were entitled to better glasses or better medical equipment than the government is providing.

There are a few you mite of left out section8 where you pay only part or no rent at all. Then there are the churches that help. I'm just upset. I own my own home in not a good part of the city. My sister get section8 and live's by a lake. out in the burbs. Med. paid. Got a free van. got free clothes funiture and food. I mean it make's me think why do I work 40 plus hours a week. Yes sometimes I think if she got no help she would get a job and stop whinning about poor me. How she has nothing. I have used clothes used furniture bought at a thirt store. garage sales. There are time I really dislike her and the goverment. So yes stop most programs and make them work. She thinks that she is worth more like won't get job unless she get's over $15.00 a hour. well, you have to sart at the bottom I did $7.05 a hour. So Yes I agree.

I give you credit for toughing it out. I would love to see the government programs reward people like you and cut back on your sister. My daughter found herself a single mom later in life and had to take assistance. She worked hard tog et off of it. Her biggest frustration was when she talked to sher social worker on ways to get a good job and get off of welfare she was told "don't worry just go home and take care of your child".Not only did she have to fight to get ahead she had to fight the workers to get off. She even got a call 6 months after she was off trying to get her to come back.

Why not just bathe in pride at the fact the money you get is what you've earned yourself? And not everyone is out to seek attention from being poor.. usually they become poor by falling into hard times that working class who manage to work and then moan about everyone else, don't understand. I suggest you stop being jelous of your own sister and continue with your own life. How old is she btw?

It is reality happy to live in American. People can enjoy so many social welfare that being a American is the dream of a lot of people of other nations. But in a way I suspect the effect of welfare that the poor enjoy. we can't certain if it help the poor to seek a better life or indulge them give up their efforts.

"all we are doing is giving then the Fish"
I think that summarize it all. We really can't blame the government in totality for poverty. This applies to all nations. We have to help ourselves to overcome this poverty and I think government is there to support (that would be good if they will really going to support the mass people).
