I don't believe in old wives tales. But my family has a host of them and all of them are pretty funny. And even more so that people still wholeheartedly believe in them. I will list a couple...
1. Never buy a man shoes, or he will walk out on you
2. Never buy a man a watch, or your time will be limited with him
3. Never wash on New Year's eve or your will wash someone out of your life
4. If a black cat runs in front of your car its bad luck
5. If you put your purse on the floor, you will always run low on money
6. A man's hat on the bed, is bad luck
I could go on forever, they have a whole list of them...lmao

I am not superstitous. I don't avoid walking under ladders, and I have many times intentionally opened an umbrella in the house just prove that there is nothing to it! There is one that you can't cut a ribbon at a wedding shower or your marriage won't last. I don't avoid black cats and when I planted a garden I certainly didn't plant my potatoes on Good Friday and they still grew fine! I just don't believe in all these old superstitions, although when I was growing up my mother certainly did. I know there were other "old wives tales", but I just can't think of them right now. I think its all a bunch of crap!

The most stupid thing I have encountered are all those emails telling me I will run into some bad luck if I don't forward the email to 10 or 20 other people. It's absolutely crazy. I hate those chain letters.

You know what I do with those emails if I like what is in the email but hate the good luck bad luck part? I delete that part and send just the good stuff.

I can't remember walking under a ladder but I have heard of that wives tell before. I don't know if there has ever been any of those old tells that have come true before. For me anyway, there was alot of them when I was young but I can't remember them all.

I think that a lot of the things we have learned over the years that we call superstitions may have originated as ways to get children to behave...because if you think about it...having a child playing around a ladder while you are at the top...do you want them walking under it? Opening an umbrella inside the house brings bad luck...well, duh....more likely to break something if you do that. My ex-husband's family had one about putting shoes away properly and right side up...if they were upside down, something bad would happen to the mother in the family. Well, how many children want something bad to happen to their mothers, so they put their shoes away properly.
There are a lot of strange ones, too, that I can't even begin to think where they originated. But I am sure there is some reason way back. I read a book once about superstitions and it had a lot of old ones that were connected to evil spirits and that following these "rules" would prevent them from bothering you. I don't believe in those kinds of things myself. But I do think that fear is involved in a lot of the superstitions and used as a tool to make children behave when they are small and impressionable. Maybe one like having 7 years of bad luck if you break a mirror...okay kids, play nice in the house or you are gonna get into trouble! Spill the salt and you will have bad luck. Well, maybe spilling anything in some families might get you a bit of bad luck if you are a kid and you were just being careless.
That's my theory anyway. It's not based on anything other than that I thought about it when I was raising my family.

Oh, and one more I have thought about over the years...that one about a black cat crossing your path being bad luck. If you are in a car and the cat crosses your path, I would think it might be a bit more bad luck for the cat than for you...especially if it doesn't move very fast.

I don't really worry about these things, although I don't walk under ladders because something might fall on you.

I've never believed in any old wive's tales. The only one I remember my grandmother mentioning was that if your palm is itchy it means you're going to get company. It never worked for me.

Most superstitions I really pay no attention to. However I do know if I spill salt I automatically throw some over my left shoulder. I've done it all my life so I picked it up somewhere. I must admit Friday the 13th makes me nervous, but I won't go out of my way to hibernate or anything, but I find myself more cautious that day.

Hello graceandowen,
My mother always used to say not to open umbrella in the house its bad luck, to me if you open your umbrella in the house it might poke someone in the eyes, as for putting shoes on the table is dirty as you est off the table and you don't what your shoe trodden on, not sure about cutting nails on Friday, but i hate seeing my husband cutting his toe nails on my carpet. I do understand about ladders if you walk under and if someone is up on the ladder, whatever he has with might fall on your or if there is no one up the ladder, the ladder might fall on you, logic.

I think that some superstitions before they became as such have been actually practical, such as walking under ladders. Well as other posts had said something might fall on you when you walk under them right? Instead of believing in superstitions to avoid bad luck I think it's best that we become more careful of our actions. I believe that a lot of bad luck is a result of carelessness. Also staying positive could give us a clearer mind and therefore we could see what's going to happen rather than blaming the bad luck for the things that we failed to see happening.

I have never really felt supersticious about anything. I think it's false probability. I don't believe in having bad-luck or good luck in that manner. We create our own luck in this world, which means it is all mental thoughts on what situation you are in. A couple superstitions that I kinda found funny and never really heard about were "A sailor wearing an earring cannot drown", "It is unlucky to rock an empty rocking chair", and "Seeing an ambulance is very unlucky unless you pinch your nose or hold your breath until you see a black or brown dog." Like I said, I found being supersticious is a waste of time, because I can thing of countless times I have passed an ambulance and had not pinched my nose or heald my breath and I am still walking tall. SO I believe superstition is just a train of thought and is up to the person to believe.

No I am not superstitious. I have even owned and loved my black cats. My grandmother had one though. Members of our family sometimes lay on the floor to watch tv. If you stepped over them to get across the room she made you walk back over. Why?She said it would stunt your growth. It always made me laugh.
