I only speak English and sometimes don't do well with it, but it seems that in todays society that we need to know at least Spanish, now wouldn't you like to know what those spanish people in line with you at the check out that is laughing so hard and pointing is saying. My grnd daughter takes Spanish in school and she says it is a hard language to learn.

Spanish isn't too hard. It's one of the easier languages because it has a straightforward pronunciation. The words are pronounced as they look the majority of the time. Although I'm a native english speaker, I'd say it was a lot harder to learn english than spanish.

I speak four languages well. I can understand a little of a fifth language, but I guess that doesn't count because I can only say a few sentences and words. Except for English, all the other languages I speak are from Asia. I do want to learn some European languages, maybe Spanish, French, or Italian. That would definitely be a challenge for me. :)

It depends what you mean by 'know', and indeed 'speak'. I'm fairly fluent in Latin, but it's not been a spoken language for centuries. I know a bit of French, German and Spanish, but I wouldn't want to produce light opera or give a dissertation on quantum mechanics in those. My wife's ex-husband spoke over 40 languages fluently, including oddities like Manx (native language of the Isle of Man) and Scots Gaelic, which practically no-one in Scotland speaks anymore. He just had a knack for learning them.

I only speak English but in school I studied French, Spanish, Latin and Greek. I liked Greek, and it was the ancient Greek, not the modern langauge spoken today. They took it off the curiculum the year after I started. Spanish is the foreign language I usually make myself understood in. The French was difficult because of the kind of textbooks and the teachers, as was the Latin. Today I can rapport in Spanish but only really speak English.

I have been to different parts of my own nation, so I know a lot of regional languages. Apart from that I can speak my national language. To compliment to the fast moving and converging world, I can very well speak English. I dont know any international languages. I am planning to learn an international language soon. Which one do you suggest.

Well English is my first language, but I'm currently studying French and Spanish at university. I'm not fluent in them yet, but can hold a good conversation and would be able to cope in the country and hopefully by the end of my degree I'll be fluent! I've also studied a bit of Italian, can speak about 3 words of German and studied Latin at school!
