The best operating system to work with depends on what you're working on in the first place, and your personal preference. If you want the latest OS technology, go for Vista. XP is for general use -- well adapted by many and most compatible at present. Linux for the desktop is for no-nonsense work and zero or minimal system maintenance, not much for gaming.

For beginners, Ubuntu would be friendliest I believe.. You can check out distrowatch for the major linux distros, find the one that suits you best because each distro can be too different from the other.

for me windows xp is better than windows vista, linux and mac. Windows XP is easier to understand than the other kinds of OS.
