Are Natural Diasters a Sign from God?

Are natural disasters signs from God? Is God trying to send us a message? Is he punishing us for some sin? And if so are we acknowledging those signs? I believe there is some wisdom to these natural disaster as they're signs to Man that his life is short and that he will not live forever, and thus learn to live every day as if it might be his last.

Hashem has not had direct contact with humans since the last prophets. Natural disasters are just that. Natural. The earth is a living entitiy and is ever changing. The powers and forces within the earth's crust are fantastic. It is a wonder that there are not more horrific disasters than there have been.
Man has known for centuries that the weather runs in various cycles such as 100 year, and 50 year flood cycles. We here in Fl. know that the hurricanes follow certain patterns too and that cold and hot ocean water have very specific effects on them.

Ummm, help! Can't remember off hand, there is a passage in one of the Gospels, where Jesus is asked about some natural disaster. And his response makes it clear. I'll get back to you if I find it

The signs were sent
The birth betrayed
The marriage spent
The widowhood
