Nowadays it is a growing trend in a fraction of second a person looses his job...my friend was working with Private Airlines she has gained 2 kilos in weight and they have actually given her the pink slip...she lost her job..another friend of mine was working for a BPO they decided to cut down on staff so that cost to company could be bought down so they were 15 of them given the pink slip...this is just not fair..how can staff just be removed for no solid reason..what do you think about the pink slip is it fair? has anyone personally gone through it?

Really it is not fair to remove a person from work in this way. They must give at least some reason or if anything wrong give some instrctions or like that. Gone are that days when a person join a job & retire at his retiring age. Nearly 90% of people are changing job themselves or removed like you are saying.

Companies usually let people go when they can't afford them--or so they say. What's actually happening, at least here, is that the shareholders won't get as big a dividends as they'd like and the executives might have to give up some luxuries. They should have given your friend a deadline in which to lose the weight. The other one, just no choice if the company needs to let people go in order to stay profitable. Here in the U.S. they have to state a good reason in most places or face a lawsuit.

Well, there should be some articles on the labor code of your country regarding forced cessation of employment. For the one with the pink slip because of the weight gain, I think that's really unfair. If she signed something, a contract for that matter, that she totally agrees to maintain a specific weight, then that's ok since she signed it. If not and there's no basis or good reason to give it to her, that's a no-no. As for the BPO, there usually is a clause in the labor code (it really depends per country) that protects employees from such. It is acceptable and it usually goes to court when a company starts to lose business and go bankrupt. It is still their right to termination employment if they are losing big. Once that status is legally established, the employees do have rights such as separation pay and at least a month's notice from the employer with proper documentation. There should be compensation. Further employment may cause the company to lose more and go down to a flat 0. Seek help from legal.

They can fire you for whatever reason they want. The only thing they can't fire you for is taking part in a walkout or refusing to cross a picket line.

Even if there are some protections in place through labor laws (I'm not sure what is the case in your country), it is not a guarantee of job security. Pink slips are quickly handed out, especially for business reasons as in 'necessary cost cutting'. Also, the worldwide economy is not the best, so I would expect more of this to happen. Pink slips can come out of the blue, but more often than not, there are already rumors around about job cuts long before the pink slips are delivered. Fair? Nobody likes losing a job, so of course not really. Losing your job because you gained two kilos (around 4 to pounds) that may be something in the contract that your friend overlooked. There should have been some sort of warning to give your friend a fair chance to lose the pounds before losing the job. Business reasons are always hard to judge. Some are 'bogus' reasons, but of late, well, companies do have to find ways to cut cost. A solid reason such as bad performance, or stealing, or something like that, those of course are fair firings;)

I think getting fired for gaining weight definitely wrong. Not only is it unethical, it's also one of the stupidest reasons for getting fired. It's not as if she were in a boxing match where one's weight may determine the outcome of the fight! Humph! It's no big surprise that many companies are taking advantage of the pink slip just to cut cost. With the unfavorable economic climate, there really is no other way to save money avoid losses than to let go of some employees. Starbucks and American Airlines have done it.

I'm going through it right now. I worked for a company for almost 8 years, a new manager came in, I made a few mistakes, and she just didn't like me. iT three years but she managed to get rid of me even though I went 7 monthes without getting wrote up. I worked so hard for that company for so long, was on time everyday, did the best I could only fired without warning.

Well I think for economic reasons that is already valid reason. What is the use of retaining lots of employees and the company losses money. For the private Airlines thing I think there is a policy regarding that. Although two kilos is not that much yet but then I think for Private Airlines they need to look thin and lightweight for you not to add weight especially if you ride the plane as flight crew or stewardess. But being an employee myself I also would feel the same as yours too when that happens what can we do if we happen to land in a company that cannot sustain us.

Hmmmm current economic situation less sales high over heads competeive prices is leaving no other option for employer to cut cost or close the set up. so the first step in it to Reduce Man Power, its really unfair but if they dont do it, whole company can bankrupt But terminating as some one gain weifght is Ridiculous Take care

These firms are in business to make money. If a firm is losing business and therefore money and they have too many staff they dismiss some of them. We have rules in the UK as to how this is done but other than that it is nothing to do with being fair or unfair it is just business and if they did not do that they would go out of business and everyone in the company would be out of a job. As the the girl who gained weight I assume there is a clause in her contract about this and if this is so and she has breached that clause then she goes. Nothing to do with being fair again just business

It is bad when this happens, the impression they are giving out is that they only want the slim amd gorgeous ones to work there, and that is being very biased toward their workforce.I know of no law that says you have to be slim to be employed at any place of work, and if you wanted to there is a case for calling it discrimination

hi nupats. I have been given the pink slip on my first job...I worked as a teacher in a school. In that school they used to send some teachers away every year because if the teachers work for many years continuously then it is not beneficial to them.. So i was sent off just like that... But then i got a far better job at which i was good at and enjoyed immensely. People send off their employees just like that. Can do nothing about it...

By the grace of God, I have not got the pink slip as of now. My suggestion regarding the same is that this is not a good idea. The cutting of staff really affects our career. It might be only a cost cutting excercise for them but for us it tends out to be much bigger.

My current work place is doing the "right sizing" thing right now. It's scary as you don't know if you are next to be hit. And you are right, there is no reason to let these people go. What I've been finding is that they are leting the little people go that don't make all that much money but are keeping all the directors that make 6 figures a year. If the company isn't bringing in enough money and are paying too many people, then why don't they try getting rid of some of the big people. I swear we have 20 directors and managers for the 80 people we have working here. That's one director for every 3-4 people! WTF? If a director cannot take care of more then 4 people then they shouldn't be one and they should be let go! It's not fair for companies to do this. The hard workers get the boot but those who do nothing get security. I agree with you, this isn't right!
