Do you hate to tell people what you do for a living?

I am a professional psychic. Have been one since I was a kid, and now do it full time. Being a descendant of someone who was hanged during the witch trials of Salem MA in the year 1694, I get a lot of odd questions.
I really hate telling people in the real world what I do for a living because of the reactions I get. Reaction one is usually negative and derogatory where some snide remark is made about taking people's money. Reaction two is the exact opposite and people expect me to read them onthe spot. Which I can do if I don't plan on keeping my friends, for this always ends in me being the center of attention.
I'm usually on target with my predictions thus my reputation is good. But that does not stop me from pausing before saying "I'm a spiritual Advisor." Sometimes I feel so self consious about it that I simply say "I'm a counselor". That of course has its own set of drawbacks.
What would you do? What do you do when that happens? I really want to know

I can for sure understand where you are coming from. As far as my main job: I am a professional writer so I have no problem talking about that. But on the side, I am also a paranormal investigator. I love what I do and I am gifted at what I do and I am not ashamed of it...but when I am at my daughters school, I am careful not to talk about it. Most times I get a positive reaction from people but there are those times where people are not all that nice.
My decision to be more silent on my second job is not to protect myself but to protect my daughter because I know how catty some school moms can be and I don't want that hurting my daughter.

That is the truth. Everyone at my children's school sees me as a stay at home mom. I volunteer a lot at the school and throughout the community with little league and other non-profits. I am afraid that knowing the truth would keep me from doing for the less fortunate in the community and have horrible complications at the school.

I don't have a problem telling people that I'm a vet nurse but you must be so sick and tired of the reactions you get. The psychic world is a crazy one because you've got fakes and phoneys on one hand, ripping people off then you've got the genuine people like yourself who take what they do very seriously. People are uneducated and ignorant if they make snide remarks. You should be very proud of your gift and don't be ashamed to say it!

It is not that I am ashamed of my heritage or my gifts, it is more I fear my children will be ridiculed. Society is not as open to these things as it pretends to be.

I used to hate when people asked me what I did because my official job title isn't true to my job and neither is the title that I have on my emails at work explaining to people who I am. I finally was told to tell everyone I was in asset management which was alot easier then explaining every little thing I do.
I think having an easy way of explaining it without going into details is the best. I think you can tell when talking to someone if it is worth going into details or if it is best left alone.
I think you job is awesome, it is kind of like a lawyer, people either love you or hate, but few fall in between.
