Sale and adulteration of water was never heard of. But today, drinking water is a tradable commodity. With lakes and wells drying up, and rivers getting polluted, consumers are increasingly looking towards bottled water as a means of meeting some of their daily requirements. As a result, bottled water is a big business with a turnover of Rs. 1,000 crore. And a litre of drinking water costs anything between Rs. 10 and Rs.15, as much as a litre of milk. At least three voluntary organisations, which tested bottled water, have a different story to tell. The latest report from the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has found pesticide residues in more than the permissible limits in bottled water. The CSE analysed 17 brands purchased in Delhi and 13 brands from Mumbai and has reported that most of the brands contained as much as five different pesticide residues. how safe is the bottled water? Are consumers getting value for their money? What do you drink when you go out? do you always order for a mineral water at hotels? i carry my sons water bottle everywhere i give him only boiled and filtered water? inspite of all this we do order mineral bottle water hardly any options...

I live in the US. We have a Pur water filter here at home. When we go out, the kids and I drink the tap water. When we bring our own water from home, it's in a Kleen Kanteen bottle (stainless steel). You have to be careful about the plastic water bottles. Bottled water from a plant is still just tap water that's been filtered and it's in a plastic bottle that leeches chemicals into the water.

Hi,
So now even bottled water is unsafe ? What is the alternative then ? I feel the only long-term solution would be the conservation of nature and water bodies and reduction of water pollution in rivers like Yamuna .

Hi dear
U r right that water is getting scared commodity and bottled water is in and is really Big Business.
But sad part is that lot of companies launch bottled water with name of Mineral water, but on test they are just tap water with bacteria
so i must say only use bottled water from somr renowned company like Nestle, Coke, Pepsi, who really have plants for that
Take care

Hello,Nupats! The bottled water is neither mineral nor filtered,it is just the tape water they are packing and selling in the market and people believe that it safe to drink these bottles.so keep a filter at home, fill it with tape water or well water and collect in the bottles and preserve the bottles in the frieze for drinking purposes.rather it is much safe to drink.thanx.

I don't bother with bottled water, most of it is tap water run through a purifier or even just bottled from the tap. I have a Brita filter for my mom and when she's not here I drink from the tap. But I'm thinking of using it all the time with all the contaminants we hear of everyday.
I remember when I was a child people would say, "next, they'll be charging us for water!" and now it's true!
Bottled water isn't as healthy as people think. I do think lots of it is contaminated and you are right to boil your son's water.
