I have decided to quit smoking today after I am done with this one pack. I am going to make sure that this time it is for good. Have tried to quit before but failed. I am finding it hard to breathe sometimes or get short of breath easily. I thought it was first due to the high humidity here in SD but have ruled that out. Maybe I won't be so tired either all the time. I will keep posts on here for progress. I am going to use the patch which will work and just spend my time on here writing.

Good for you! Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your health. You body will even start to feel better after a couple days and you will be able to breathe alot easier without all that poison in your throat!
Congrats on making the best decision in your life and I know you can do it.

That's good to hear. I have a lot of friends who have also tried but discovered they were hooked. Not only is smoking an addictive vice, it's also bad for your social life. You'll tend to hang out with people who smoke. You can't spend as much time with your family. And you get really grumpy if you don't get your fix. SO I hope you hang in there and always think of the long term effects smoking will have on your body.

Hi Sdmoonchild...
OK now if I may say something, of course with ALL due respect, why do you want to quit after 'this last pack"?
That is where I always fail, after this last cig, etc. Why not just throw the pack away and start now?
I am a smoker, and I know what it can do to your body, I wish I had the will power but fact is I do not!
I do know how hard it is to quit, maybe try not lighting up first thing in the AM, I mean if you think about it.. depending on how many hours of sleep you get, you have been SMOKE FREE for a number of hours, maybe we should all try to quit in the AM.... ya know?

Smoking has never been my hobby and am extremely lucky I never ever smoked-I used to admire smokers as a youth, I thought it was macho to stand agog and smoke as the ladies looked on, unfortunately, or shall I say fortunately, my first attempt at smoking was a disaster-smoke went the wrong way and I got so chocked and sick there after-that was the end of my contact with smoking-I dont regret anything about not being a smoker!

hey buddy, i don't know your exact condition but here i was a chain smoker for more than 8 yrs... one thing i can suggest is that its always a choice.. you ve a choice as i had 12 years ago...i started smokin when i was in my 2nd grade and believe it or not i use to smoke a packet of wills a day than... i smoke for more than 8years. but deep inside i knew its not helping me in any way so i decided to just quit it. its a choice as i ve said, i said no more and i ve never touch it again though all friends use to smoke i ve made my decision and tats it.
so fren what i can say is that its you! who need to make a choice cos no matter what people says at the end its you who decide whether or not.. its in your hand! God bles you and help you in your journey.

I think that any bad habit that you want to try to stop doing is always a good idea, especially when it hurts others. I have a friend whose son was diagnosed with severe asthma. This poor boy is around smoking all the time because both his mom and dad smoke right in front of him. They smoke at home and in the car with him right there. I just think it is wrong that children have to suffer for what their parents do.
Once you quit smoking you will feel so much better. You will actually reduce your chances of lung cancer by half. I hope you succeed!

Congrats on your decision! I quit smoking 6 months ago and it was the best thing I have done. My clothes smell better, I seem to have more energy and get more accomplished, and as crazy as it sounds my house doesn't seem to get dusty so fast.
I tried the patch and ultimately what got me to quit for good was a prescription for Chantix. I got a prescription with 6 refills, but only had to use it for a month. I can't say I haven't had the desire to smoke, but then when I look at all the money I've saved and the improvement in my and my families life, I don't do it.
Just a word of advice, change some of your patterns that trigger the urge to smoke. I chewed gum immediately after dinner and did the dishes instead of going to smoke, I traded the morning coffee for tea the first 3 weeks, and I took the dog for a walk when I felt a big urge.
You can do this!! Good luck!

Good for you guys who were successful in quitting. I have also tried several times to quit smoking but it did not work out. I know it is a matter of discipline but is really hard for me especially that I do research job and mostly work till dawn. But I will try because I am encouraged by the experiences of others here who have made it.
