So I was just contacted by this potential client for a 2 day wedding event. Here are the details:
August 29th 6-10pm
August 30th 9am-1pm
August 30th 6-11pm.
That's a total of 13 hours!!! It's an Indian wedding, which I'm excited about because I've never done one. However, when I said it would be $750 she kind of hesitated. WTF??? That's 13 hours out of my life that I will not get back!!! That's the last summer weekend and it's a holiday weekend!!! SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..... We did arrange a meeting for this evening, I'm just not sure if she'll hire me or not. I can't do it for less that than - and that's not even counting copyrights, prints, albums, etc...
Thoughts?

Stick to your price point no matter what!
People must be made aware of the costs and efforts associated with wedding photography... They will think that it's just a bunch of snapshots unless you educate them about this intensive process.
I used to charge an hourly fee of $200.00 bucks to get people to reconsider their wedding and reception length, plus I had a contract that stipulated the minimum and maximum amount of work required.
$750 isn't out of line for a four hour job, but it's way too low for 13 hours of work, and all the efforts afterwards... Take it from me, I've been there, Mare73! :)
Some wedding laughs for you! :)

$750 is VERY cheap... especially considering it's a 2 day event! I know most photographers around here charge by the hour... Like for example for 5 hours of coverage prices start at $600, for 10 hours of coverage prices start at $1000, then for every additional hour of coverage it's $100 per hour. Those prices are just an example, it's different for every photographer.
I'm sure if she does some research she'll find that $750 is a real bargain! Especially for the amount of coverage she wants.

That is so reasonable! THere are so many other photographers that would charge much more than that. I think for two days, 13 hours that is so reasonable. heck I would hire you! To bad I'm not getting married and probably we are in different areas LOL.
Would you have any advice for someone who just wants to do photography for a living, not so much wedding shots since I just have a small digital camera: Sanyo t700.

Photography is a hard business. I agree $750 is acctually on the low side. So if she doesn't hire you she may not find better. Good luck. I think she may realize that you are worth it.

Hello Mare73...
You can always make a "few" consessions here and there, $15.00 - $25.oo dollars less, but no more than that. However, speaking from my own professional experience, when it comes to wedding shoots in general...
"the price IS the price"!
Actually, for the amount of hours involved...I'd say your figure is VERY reasonable....maybe even a bit low. Most pros would probably not even consider doing the job for less than STARTING at $1000.oo. So, they shouldn't quibble. They should consider themselves lucky, just getting it for $750.oo!
And...if you've never tackled a wedding before, (especially an Indian one)
then trust me, they're are getting a darn good deal.
Good luck my friend.
But next time, charge what YOU believe YOU and YOUR talents are worth.
Don't "guess" at a figure. Always cover your costs first by at least 20%,
then add your time in by setting an hourly rate...and don't be cheap with yourself.
Remember, it's YOU they have chosen for your professionalism.....and beyond that especially...remember, there are no "friends" when it comes to business.
Have a great shoot.
