I think the reason why China is a bigger threat to India than Pakistan has to do with history. In the three-wars they fought, India has crushed Pakistan on the battle field. By comparison, India lost the one war they fought with China. When you look at things, India is bigger than Pakistan in nearly every way, but it's small than China in just about all the main leading indicators of military and economic development.
As such, the psyche of Indian leaders in their relationship with Pakistan is one of cautious confidence, whereas the idea of dealing with China is fraught with nervousnes. It's like nobody wants to get into a fight but your confidence of dealing with someone who's smaller and lost the three fights to you is greater than than dealing with someone who is bigger and beat you quite easily the last time you fought.
Look at this way, when India tested it's nuclear weapon, the then defense minister made it clear that the nuclear weapon was to deal with China rather than Pakistan. Although India and China have only fought one war, the Chinese have been known to provide help Pakistan in its struggle against India. As such, the Chinese are not exactly great friends of India. The Sino-Indian relation has potential problems. Pakistan is helped by China, which irritates India. India host the Dalai Lama, which irritates China. And both the USA and Japan have decided to try and build up India to block China's rise.
Having said that, I don't think China and India will rush into war against each other. Trade between the Asian Giants have been increasing. I think both have come to respect each other's strengths. While it's accepted that India is good in services and China is good in manufacturing......there's been allot of cross pollination. India is investing in China and visa versa. The world should be prepared for the opportunity of these growing Asian giants getting close.
