Do you think the "spam police" are going too far these days?

We all hate spam, but, do you think it's wrong for email providers to decide what they think is spam and simply delete it without giving you a chance to ever see it? I became aware recently that my ISP does this and it annoys me tremendously. I don't mind when they put it in a spam or "bulk" folder, but just deciding it's spam and deleting it should be MY decision, not theirs. Does anybody else agree?

Some ISPs do this. I know AOL does because I send out a newsletter that the people have to subscribe to; otherwise, they wouldn't get one. Lots of times, I will get them ALL back from AOL or any other ISP connected with AOL, telling me it is considered Spam. Sometimes they will say an URL within it is banned. Why can't they let their readers decide for themselves what is good and what isn't. I have never spammed anyone and won't ever. And, the newsletter is by subscription anyway.

Yeah, ISPs do this, and it's extremely annoying. After all, every once in a while, they are definitely going to catch false positives, and you wouldn't even know that someone has sent you a legitimate email. I suppose the one solution is just to switch out of using your ISP's email service provider. Choose something like Gmail or Yahoo--they all keep your spam in spam folders.

gmail is known to be best for giving you ALL your mail, even though they do give you a spam folder for whatever they think is spam, they don't just delete anything and keep from you seeing it altogether.

I absolutely agree with you. When I went to college, I often needed to email other students about group projects and stuff like that. A lot of the time my messages never got read; sometimes, this was because my correspondents never checked their spam folders, but other times my messages just got filtered out. Very annoying! No wonder I disliked group projects so much :) Obviously, spam is a big problem, but email loses its effectiveness as a communication tool if genuine messages are not getting received.

It's a good point and it kind of annoys me, too. But what's your solution? Would you rather look through the hundreds of spam e-mails you must get weekly in the hopes of finding one that isn't?

Actually, yes. If they put it in a spam folder I glance through it before deleting.
