I am a bit nervous about a BC option.

I was recently told to consider the option of the shot instead of the NuvaRing for some health and comfort related concerns. This does scare me a little because I am also diabetic and suffer from severe anxiety and depression. Can anyone offer me any info or advice on this issue?

Were you prescribed it by your OB-GYN? If you see an endocrinologist, you might want to talk him/her about it and see what their input is. I do know that my diabetic friend had a lot more success in regulating her blood sugar after going on birth control, but your mileage, of course, might vary. Hopefully, you don't have any problems. I did the ring for a couple of years before having to switch to a higher estrogen formula, and it wasn't nearly as weird as I thought it'd be. I had bad PMS and it definitely helped smooth out those mood swings and anxiety attacks.

It hasn't been prescribed yet but my OB-GYN did give me the option. I do have an appointment coming up with my endocrinologist next month. I have always been a very brittle diabetic and don't want to screw my diabetes up when it has been pretty good for me. The shot itself does sound a little weird, to me. The whole idea of messing with mother nature freaks me out! But at the same time, my monthly cramps are so extreme that they, alone, have sent my blood sugar out of whack and landed me in the hospital. Thank you so much for you input! I do have alot to think about.

It's important to remember that any kind of pharmaceutical (sp) birth control pill is messing with mother nature. Even when you're on the ring (I am) and you have your period it's not a real period. It was built in by birth control designers to put our mind at ease. However, if your periods are so bad that they're putting you in the hospital, I say screw mother nature. I've found the ring to be very convenient.

The shot can lead to bone density issues. I'd research it a lot. I used to be on it, but went off because of the risk of osteoporosis, which is already in my family. It is very convenient. Expensive if I recall... But... yeah. I'd look into the risks. It is known to cause depression so if you ALREADY suffer from that it might be a problem...if it increases it.

thanks pixie. I do have medical assistance that would leave me with only a copay but I am finding that with the more people I talk to about it, the cons are building up. The osteoporosis is in my family as well. I don't want to go down that road with that any farther that I may already have to.
