My friend tells me that almost all Indians are vegetarians. Is this true? Or is this a misconception?

That has to be a huge misconception. There are many people of East Indian origin in Trinidad and they make curry chicken, geera pork, curry goat, and all sorts of delicious meats. Have you ever tasted a good curry chicken? How can someone be vegetarian if they make something tasting that good?! I don’t particularly like meat myself, and yet I don’t pass up any curried meat.
The ones who don’t eat meat only avoid certain meats and don’t do so for religious reasons. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve been around Hindus and Muslims my whole life and from what I understand, Hindus do not eat beef or any part of the cow because they believe it is a sacred animal. Muslims do not eat meat that has not been “halal” (I’m not sure if it’s spelt correctly). “Halal” means lawful and there are specific meats considered lawful and unlawful. Almost all commercial meats selling in T&T are halal out of consideration for the Muslim population. I think it is similar to the Jewish concept of Kosher.
As for Native American Indians, someone rightfully mentioned earlier that they were hunters, so they would have eaten meat.
In the end, you’ll find vegetarians in every culture. Vegetarianism is an individual choice, not necessarily a racial or cultural thing.

Whoa! What you said sounded very logical! I know about the Muslims eating only halal meat. In fact Mulsims don't take pork.
I' not sure about Hindus not eating beef. But yes, I did hear that cow is sacred to them, so I guess it makes sense for them not to eat beef then...
Thanks!

Most indians are hunters so that can't be true. They don't celebrate thanksgiving though so that might be where some people get that from.

I would consider this a definate misconception. I am sure just like in any other Country and such, or nationality there are many different types of people, and Eaters. If everyone was the same, there would not be so much to choose from in variety. I personally know most Indians eat a lot of Rice or Curry, and the Curry I see them serve is either Lamb or Chicken, so this would mean they are not Vegetarian, correct?

I love this discussion, it clears up something I experienced a few years ago. In my early childhood center we had an East Indian family. We were required at their mother's request to serve them vegetarian meals, but the son would confide that Dad eats chicken. I love learning on myLot.
