I used to work as a technical support manager for an ADSL provider and the biggest headache we had was getting people up and running due to firewall and antivirus software. The worst of all was Norton, when disabled we could get them on no problem, the next was MCafee and another called Panda, they all seemed to prevent connections to the internet. After much trial and error, here on my own PC I have gone with Comodo, it has lots of different settings from lax to completely paranoid! Just wondered what experiences you have all had with different anti virus and firewall software, which you prefer and why?

Talking about Norton, Its a very effective antivirus but makes your PC's performance too slow, so most of them don't prefer to use it . Norton leaves many residues even after uninstallation, so you should download a software - Norton Complete remover(I can't remember the name exactly, but it is similar to it). As far as your antivirus problem , you should use something which protects your PC in every way, Try Avg Internet security, it has everything in it. You can aslo try Kaspersky or Panda Antivirus. I would recomend Avg Internet Security.

I work for a computer/networking company. We've sold Norton and McAfee in the past, but both have had holes that we coudln't stand behind the product. About 2 years ago we began selling NOD32 from ESET. ESET's site says it best - "ESET delivers the fastest, most effective and most proactive antivirus and antispyware software solution to eliminate viruses, spyware, adware, worms, trojans, rootkits and other malware before they attack your system."
We have been completely sold out on this product. It works beautifully! You should look into it further. If you're interested in talking with someone directly about the benefits of ESET's products, you can call 800.358.7447.

Thanks for the response. I've never heard of that, must look into it. I do like to keep myself up to date on these types of software, I think it is important to protect ourselves in the best way possible and the market does keep changing, so do viruses for that matter.

You've tried quite a lot of different anti-viruses haven't you? It's probably the only way to find out which suits you best. I have heard of sygate of course, will look at it. Why could you not use comodo, presumably your not on Vista and it caused some sort of problems?
Thanks for responding.

i used to use zone alarm for firewall but one time when i was trying to update it told me it was not compatible with the anti virus i was using (i don't remember which one it was). so i had to uninstall it and look for another firewall. many people recommended comodo so i went with it. their anti virus was still in beta at the time so i didn't use it. i'm currently using the free version of AVG.
one thing i find rather annoying about firewalls is that we have to 'train' them. in the beginning they would keep asking if this or that program should be granted access, etc. the obvious ones like IE or firefox are easy, but there are many that i have no clue as to what they are or do. so deciding whether to allow them or not is the hardest part.

I prefer Kaspersky, it is every efficient to get rid of virus. And when i don't use it, i will turn it off to let the system run faster. Some other antivirus software can slow the system even you turn them off. Some antiviruse even omit spy soft ware of big companies. I know Kaspersky it objective and keep my PC safe.

i also used to have norton on my system, it was too heavy and everytime i turned my pc on, it would take about 5 mins to boot up completely, i used to like AVG 7.5, it was about 19 to 20 mb, so its fine, but the latest AVG ,(8.0), is about 45 mb, too heavy... What i do now is download the eset smart trial version, which is good for 2 months, and when the due date is near, i simply uninstall it and download the trial version again, its very light on your system but very strict.i would recommend it to you guys...

Does that work then, uninstalling and reinstalling, I always find that there is something left in the registry that indicates to the software that "time is up." If you know of a way to get rid of that stuff, would appreciate some advice.
Thanks for your response.

I used to not use any virus and anti-spyware software to prevent my computer from geting viruses ect. as they always slowed my computer down, lol yep im a spead freek, and that just anoyed me so as i knew a fair amount about computers every month or so i would go through my computer bit by bit and remove any unwanted programs, but as i was spending more time away from home my parents had no computer skills at all so they wouldnt be able to remove the viruses ect. so i found a software called SpyBot Search and Destroy, this is a free program and it prevents most viruses and spyware from geting on to your computer, its easy to use and dosent even slow my computer down that much when running, so yea take a look for it as its great and as i menchoned, its FREE! lol and it has free updates aswell.

Speed freak indeed! Actually I already use SpyBot S&D, on recommendation from Security Cadets, a great bunch of on-line volunteers who will personally help you, free of charge, to clean your machine if you have any nasties. It sits there so quietly I had forgotten to mention it, but I am glad you did for the benefit of all the other readers and contributors to this discussion.
Thanks for your addition.

This is a first hand field experience. But I'm sure and you know it too that its just a matter of settings. These big names in AV and firewalls market are guaranteed to work on any internet connection and we cannot ignore the fact that there are personal preferences. For me I only use freewares AVG, Avast and PCTools firewall these tools serves it purpose of protection I need.

You're right of course, my experience on my own pc has been to play with the settings till it works for me. My problems in tech support were usually the user, being supported over the telephone and being almost completely computer illiterate, was almost impossible to teach and point in the right direction. I always found that having them install AVG and get rid of everything else usually did the trick.
Thanks for responding to this.

Hi Ritz,
I had that problem with Norton. It's very aggrevating. I was about to cancel my DSL provider, because I couldn't understand why I couldn't get to any other sites but the provider site. One of the technicians was very patient in walking me through the problem. So now my Norton is disabled. But is that good?

It is good that you now know that Norton is what was preventing you from accessing the internet, but you really MUST have an alternative Anti-virus on your computer. Either get AVG or Comodo. Both are free for home users and are consistently updated for new viruses, do NOT go on the internet without any virus protection. avg.com will get you started. Let me know if you need any help, request friendship and pm me okay?

Do you have to pay for Norton? Im not up to date on their policy right now. If you do, get rid when your license runs out. There are loads of free and better (less invasive) programs that will serve you. AVG, as mentioned before, Comodo and dont forget a spyware/adware defense, like SpyBot S&D. If you need any help or advice request a friendship and pm me, I will try to advise you.

I use Kaspersky. I've been using it for years now, and have never had a problem with internet and such, even when I just leave it at the default settings. Although I do modify it a little... And I've never had any malware problems ever since I started using it.

Ive used panda for alot of time aswell. Its really good, the reason you couldnt connect to the internet is because of windows firewall. If both pandas and windows firewall are enabled at the same time it always causes that problem. Anyways, i just use the antivirus i can get. AVG seems to be good but i got a 3 years free abbonement from buying my laptop on norman antivirus and its really nice too so im using that atm. Hope it helped ;)

That seems to be the only way Norton can get their software onto computers now, by packaging it on new purchases. It seems that Symantec and Microsoft had a bit of a falling out a while back and Windows intentionally causes problems with Norton. Dont you find it slows your system down?
