Hey Friends in Mylotland can you please help me!!! I am having a very difficult time with my nightime junk food habit! I have been staying up late with you guys and sometimes I get an urge for some chips or cookies or cake and I can't stop myself. I never was good at controlling those urges. I stopped smoking and maybe it's a delayed reaction. Anyway, I starting to gain weight! Now I don't know what to do-don't say gum, cause that will lead to another discussion about lack of teeth!lol Can you please help me!!!

I have the same problem with late night muchy attacks! I usually try to drink alot of water, it makes me feel good about doing something healthy and I have something to consume. If I have to have a snack, I usually eat it very slowly to make it seem like I'm eating more. Sometimes, I rinse my mouth with Listerine, then nothing tastes as good. Good luck to you and have a wonderful night!

I think that the best way if you can't stop munching on these things is to find healthier alternatives to eat. Why don't you try fruits instead of all those junk foods? Also having a full meal could help you suppress the urge to eat more during those times.

I love chips. Sometimes, I have those urges to munch on chips at night, usually after my meals. But after I get on the computer later at night, I usually concentrate on what's on the screen. But just before I go to sleep, if I'm really hungry, I usually have a glass of milk or a piece of bread or something. Here's what you can do to stop your late-night junk food eating habit. 1) Drink water. It will make you full without any calories, maybe you won't feel like having anything anymore. 2) Brush your teeth after dinner. Some people refuse to eat anything else after brushing their teeth because they are too lazy to brush them again if they eat junk food. 3) Last resort. Don't stock up on chips or cookies or cakes. If you know that you don't have them, you just have to live without it for the night. That's what I do. Whenever I go grocery shopping, I avoid buying these junk foods. But my efforts can be in vain sometimes, because my hubby buys them when we ran low of these junk foods at home! Try them for fun!

okay, Opal. I have read all the other posts above and it seems we all are suffering from junk food addiction, If i may call it that.. And now, the not so fun part..i dont wanna spoil it but you posted and I just wanna say my piece.. Almost 4 years ago, i was the same as you. i couldn't resist the temptations of junk foods and sweets and so succumb to every whims..My husband brought home delicious and mouth watering snacks and cakes from the hotel bakery where he used to work, so imagine, how wide my eyes were at the sight of those goodies.. then i gained weight and found out after a miscarriage that i also became a diabetic!! So, to make it short, the doctor prohibited me from eating those foods that I so loved and changed my diet totally..I want to live for as long as I can and want to see my kids grown ups and have families of their own, so i followed the advice.. and now, since i started doing my online businesses at night when the kids are sleeping, and no husband to scold me, I found myself sneaking again in the pantry and inside the ref, guess what, for the goodies my kid bought for himself!! i am so ashamed of myself for eating my kid's food .. Anyway, because of that, my sugar is going up again and have to go to the doctor to have my bloodworks..i am on a tablet maintenance because my diabetes can still be controlled. Fact is, I am scared when the results comes in, the doc might tell me I have to inject insulin already because the tablets would not work for me anymore..BUT I pray not, because that would really be scary.. So, with this response, i hope you would all think twice or many times before munching sweets and junk foods ever again.. Now, dont tell me that you guys are in control of your intake of those foods..It doesnt matter if you only eat a little now and a little tomorrow and a little again the next day. To sum it all, you might be alarmed one day that you have gotten sick without any signs..there are other sickness like UTI, kidney and bladder problems which came from eating unhealthy foods..

hey,Opal..but even if you watch the sodium and sugar content in a product packaging, most are not usually consistent and true..So, what i did before was totally not eat those and I stayed away from carbs..thou I was allowed to eat one cup of rice for lunch and dinner and that's it.. It was really hard at first, but once accustomed, it worked and I lost weight, a lot!! Guess, it was the thought of dying from complications of diabetes, that got me really scared..i would rather miss the things I used to love to eat, than miss my loved ones and I'm six feet under... You said, you have an extreme high blood pressure? Then, stay away from those unhealthy foods and don't count the sodium percentage anymore..It wouldn't do you any good..Yours is a traitor disease and much more complicated than mine..Do it gradually, if you cannot give it up immediately..But, please don't take too long, because all those harmful ingredients are building up fast in your heart... As for me, Thanks too, for starting this topic, because I too suddenly realized that apart from eating forbidden foods, I am also sneaking up on my son and my husband ..And that for sure, when found out, they wouldn't like...thanks...

Oh eihdra, I'm so sorry! I have a close friend who is diabetic and I know how hard it is to have to watch everything you put in your mouth. Everything you eat turns to sugar and people who don't have diabetes tend to not realize how difficult this is. But I do know and it is really hard. If I had to do it it would be difficult, but I would have no choice. I am a big carbs eater so I really would have to give up alot of goods. You are so right, but when you are truly forced to do something it is different. I have extremely high blood pressure and have had it for years. I learned to watch my sodium intake, reading everything I buy, because everything is high in sodium and I did that well. So I should do the same with sugar. You have made me re-think what I am doing. Thank you for opening my eyes, dear eihdra. I hope that you will not need insulin and you will stay well. Your friend, Opal

Hie Opal, I am not sure whether this works for you Buy less junk food and don't store them too much in the house. Instead spend the saved money that you usually spend on junk food and buy more healthy snacks like most responders have advised - fruits and vegetables. Less of those tempting junk food around you, the less you would think of them and focus on mylotting Cheers and best wishes

No Smoking - Veggies to replace cigs?
Well one of the main things you can do is stop buying sweets and things like that to have in the house. Have some chopped carrots and stuff like that in there or if you need sweets get sugar free or fat free chips. My husband did that when he quit smoking or had peppermints near by. He doesn't mylot but he is on the computer and other forums so he'll drink sugarfree soda's.

I have tried all the healthy snack stuff. I just still go back to the junk! I'm drinking my diet coke right now, but I'm thinking about what would go nicely with it and it isn't carrots!

Two very important things that can help you. One more than the other. #1 - Stop buying the junk food. If you don't buy it, it's not in the house and you wont eat it. #2 - But healthy snacks. Carrots and celery are great finger foods!

Oh man opal! This situation your in is dangerous for it's the late night eating that causes one to gain weight and the fact that you stopped smoking (which is wonderful) is like a double wammy. You have the mental strength to not go to that fridge or cabinet. If mylot is causing you to eat than don't be on mylot at night or how about putting some more nutritious foods in your fridge (yeah, I know so boring). Well however you decide to handle it, I wish you the best. Take care and God Bless!

opal why not make the mu nchies something good for you like fruit and yogurt or peanut button on whole grain toast, or peanut butter on a banana or even a cup of lo fat icecream with a piece of chocolate or a glass of milk one percentwith wholegrain bread and lo fat cheese. or fat free fruit yogurt with a piece of fresh fruit. that would take away the emty feeling and still not make you gain weight.

Don't have junk food in your house would be one way to get around it. Or to urge yourself to eat something healthy first like an apple, banana, or a couple of grapes, before digging into that cookie. It's a matter of retraining your brain to stop the late night cravings for sweets.

Years ago I noticed when I was doing patchwork I didn't snack! Same goes for knitting, or any sort of craft you do with your hands. It keeps you occupied and you don't reach for the food. If I'm reading, I eat - but when I was hand-sewing little one-inch squares on to a piece of fabric, hours would pass without me wanting anything to eat. Worth a try!

I have the same problem. But mine stems from a side effect of a nighttime medication I take. Never fails, I'm starving an hour later. Try light microwave popcorn. Or like I did tonight I had a bowl of cereal with lowfat milk - and healthy cereal. Filled me up. You aren't by chance taking any medication that would cause this are you? For me its Amitriptyline.

Hi Tess, I asked the Dr.the same question. I think it is the Doxipin that I take at night. He says no but the side effects say possible weight gain and I wasn't doing the uncontrollable eating before I started taking it.

I'm a munchies and crunch person too. I try to find something that I can eat a bunch of and not feel too guilty. My personal favorite is 94% fat free butter popcorn I can much on a bag and not sink down too many calories and there's not too much fat in it either. I notice that I feel fuller when I eat the entire of something like a whole bag of popcorn. So i opt for the snack size 100 cal bags. I can eat the entire bag and munch and crunch, and feel like I made a good choice. Another healthier alternative is cutting up carrots in to tiny strips. Carrots are crunchy and you can munch them all day long. Just some things that have worked for me.

I have found that drinking a glass of milk controls hunger, even if your hunger is just "the munchies". I was doing that for awhile to control late night cravings, and should probably start that again. I've also found that you're less likely to want to eat right after brushing your teeth, so when the urge to munch strikes, try brushing your teeth, or swishing some mouth wash. The taste it leaves in your mouth will turn you off from the idea of having sweets.

Hello Opal. I am familiar with this situation and I recommend you every time you know you are going to be in this situation, take your time and make your self a nice basket of fruit or if you don't want to gain weight, a plate or a dish of vegetables are better. cut some carrots, cucumber, tomato, you can put some olives for the taste or even a little bit of cheese.. what ever tou, like and put it in a nice shape. whenever you feel like you can grabe one of these with no hard or guilt feelings .. it is healthy and even good for your teeths.

Hello , Sounds like me over the winter. I cant stop the night eating , and all the wrong foods too . Come this summer I started a diet , and feel so much better . Junk food seems to slow me down , and always make me feel fuller , and just worn . I now eat more fruits , and sometimes mix them with a low fat yougurt , and an ice cream . Try the reduce fat , and the low fat stuff . Sart out takig baby steps , and before you know it you will feel so much better . You need time to clean your body out that is why you are craving . Best of luck , you can do it

Dear Opal, I'm just as bad - as long as I'm on the computer or watching TV / DVD, I'll be snacking away. My favourite junk food is chips, chocolates and ice-cream. The only consolation is that I've not gain any weight (yet), as I have a rather stressful job. But I'm not so sure about my teeth or gums - haven't check yet!

Hi Opal26, Thats what happens when you give up smoking replaceing one addiction with another but I am bot so good as you I am a smoker. Maybe you should get some nuts that are healthy and keep them by your computer and munch them rather then all those lovely fatty snacks, good luck to you and enjoy. Tamara
