Hi! What kind of cake do you believe is appropriate for a birthday?
Is it only appropriate if it is:
a. Completely and totally made from scratch. (You gather all of the ingredients yourself.
b. Made from a box cake mix. (Most of the powder ingredients are assembled in a box. Usually, all you have to add in are the eggs and the liquids. This is almost completely from scratch.)
c. Pre-made, cook it yourself; also known as "the microwave cake" - the cake mix is already mixed; you just cook it in the microwave.
d. Pre-made, no need to cook it. (This cake is a bakery cake made by someone else, or it may be one that comes out of the freezer section as a frozen cake from the grocery store.)
e. Some other option that I have not indicated above.
Which do you think are appropriate? Which do you think are totally inappropriate for someone's birthday celebration?

I think that they all could be appropriate. My grandmother used to make mine b/c I had a special flavor that you just didnt buy. There there is premade ice cream cakes. I think you should always ask the Birthday person what they want. That is what make it special whatever they want.

Asking the person what they want is probably the safest thing to do. That way, if they do happen to be particular about what kind of cake they want for their birthday, you can be sure to get it for them!
Thanks for your reply!

I think that any cake is appropriate for any occasion (I like cake, lol!) No, seriously though, as long as it's a cake that the person whose birthday it is likes, then it doesn't matter how it is made or who makes it. My mum used to make our birthday cakes when we were growing up, but some of my friends' cakes were bought from shops, and my daughter's last birthday cake was also shop-bought. It was very chocolate-y so she loved it, and it was probably much nicer than one I could have made myself!

LOL... I like cake, too. My wife tells a story about how her grandmother used to make cake that had chocolate frosting on top that was just about the consistency of fudge... I would like to try that kind of cake someday; I think it would be my favorite.

For heavens sake, whatever tastes good!!! Especially, whatever the birthday person likes. After all, it is their day. The most inappropriate thing to do is to forget the birthday of someone who really likes to be remembered!!!

Now that is a passionate reply! And I agree, whatever the birthday person likes is usually the best road to take... and that it is most inappropriate to forget a birthday "of somoene who relly likes to be remembered" ...
Thanks for your reply!

Hi,Nathan:
For me, I like birthday cake with all kind of fruits.Of course,if it is available, I would like to make one by myself.
The most important thing is the appearence of the cake.Just it is needed to increase happy mood.Maybe you can provide a stranger one.
Happy day.

At first, I could not think of a cake with fruits. Then I remembered "pineapple upside down cake" ... a cake that is covered with pineapple slices.
Most cakes in the States are covered with sugar - smoothed out with some liquid into frosting. Are cakes in China also frosted with frosting, or are cakes in China frequently covered with fruit?
As for a stranger cake, my elderly grandmother opens a cake mix box and pours the contents into a pan. Then, she opens a can of crushed pineapples and pours them into the pan. She puts it into the oven... and out comes "pineapple dump cake". (It really is a cake, and it is tasty, too!)
You have a happy day, too!

I think it totally depends on for whom are you making the cake. In case you are making the cake for a close person then you can cook everything by yourself but in case its a distant relative then you can buy one for them.

I think that some people take the same approach when they send cards. If it is a closer relative, they are more likely to write lots of personal notes inside; if it is a more distant relative, the card company's message that is imprinted on the card will suffice.

It really doesn't matter to me how the cake is made as long as there is a cake. I ordered my sons cake because he wanted spiderman and there was no way I could draw a spider man! So I just usually order mine!

Hi my friend,
I think whatever you want to do is absolutely appropriate!
I don't think you have to make a cake from scratch in order for it to be a nice thing to do. Buying one of those pretty pre-made cakes at a bakery would be just fine. I think those ice cream cakes from Dairy Queen or Baskin Robbins are great too. They seem to go over really well.
If it was left to me, I'd have to go out and buy one. I'm not that great of a baker and I'm sure the ready made ones would taste much better.

Hi, Char ~
I like the pretty pre-made cakes from the bakery, too. I think that the best part of the cake is the frosting, and I especially like the bakery version of the "sugary rot your teeth" kind of frosting. Dairy Queen is great, and I've seen their cakes, but I don't believe that I have ever actually had one.
Given the choice, I think that I would rather buy a cake than make one, too, but it would probably depend upon who it was for.
Thanks for your reply!
