Energy prices up 35% in UK, what next!

July 30, 2008 5:30pm CST
British Gas, the UK's largest domestic energy supplier, with 15.9 million customers, has announced that the price of gas is going up 35%, and with immediate effect. They are also raising the price of electricity by 9%. According to BBC news, British Gas are blaming rising wholesale prices. News report from the BBC is here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7533389.stm What do you think about this? What is happening in your country? In the UK we've seen petrol prices rise, and food prices and now household bills are rising. I'm not with British Gas but the other energy companies are expected to follow suit and raise prices. Gas prices going up by 35% would cost us I think, another 20 GB pounds (about 40$) a month, or around £250 (500$) a year. And I am already the sort of person who wears a jumper in the house in the autumn and only puts the central heating on when it's really cold.

I've just left British gas and I'm so glad I did it, although I'm sure Scottish hydro electric (scottish and southern) will be following suit but according to the newspapers they will still be the cheapest. The whole situation is getting ridiculous and I blame the energy companies as I'm sure they could cope with less profit but then that's not the way things are done. Global warming is actually doing me a favour as I haven't had any heating on for 3 months and I live in Scotland. I'm praying for a long summer and warm autumn or else I'll be wearing as much indoors as out.

Yes I'm not with British Gas anymore, but like you I think it is likely that all the energy companies will follow and end up putting prices up and so we will all end up paying more. I'm not in Scotland but I am hoping that the summer lasts. I pay on direct debit and we have not had the heating on for months so I'm hoping I will have stored up some money on the direct debit so it won't be a huge bill I then have to find the money for.
