Is stressing at her computer!!!! There is a virus somewhere, but where???

How do you find a virus that is on your computer?? Ive got a virus alert but cant find the virus, all my scanning icons that were on my desktop have disappeared and when you go the start button in the left hand corner, the all programs button has disappeared!!!
It all appeared when my boyfriend went to go on facebook yesterday. I dont know how to treat my computer and my computer doctor is on holiday at the mo!! Typical!!
Any tips and ideas welcome!!

update your anti virus database first. after that, go to folder option and show the hidden files. select all the boxes. then, scan my computer.. have a try.. :)

Ive updated and scanned but it still says virus alert. Most of my scanning icons have vanished from my desktop. How can i get them back??

gosh, sounds bad.
if you got the alert, the virus scan should be taking care of it. run another scan and see what it does. also might have to restart your computer to see if that helps. but hey, I am not an expert.
I hope that somebody on here can give you very valid advice.
