Will Obama even answer the simplest question?

Obama has recently been telling people that Republicans will try to scare voters into voting against him. That's a fair statement, especially as he himself is trying to scare voters into voting against McCain by saying he will be the same as Bush. Fear's a powerful tool. However, Obama still refuses to face McCain in a fair town hall forum. Here is an excerpt from a recent article on Obama. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080731/ap_on_el_pr/obama "I'm ready to duel John McCain on taxes right here, quick draw," Obama said, prompting a quick retort from the other side. "If Barack Obama wants this so-called duel then why did he and his entourage run for the hills when John McCain challenged him to 10 town halls?" McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said. Obama responded after shaking hands at a restaurant in Lebanon, Mo. "I don't hear very much positive from Sen. McCain," he said. "He seems to be only talking about me. You need to ask John McCain what he's for, not just what he's against." And so Obama continues to hide from a true debate with John McCain...

Taskr, Obama will never, IMO, agree to a town hall format of debate! There are too many variables he can't control and then there is the issue of no teleprompter! I really have my doubts as to whether we as the voting public will see ANY significant debates this election year. I believe Obama will do like many murderers on trial; play it safe and refuse to testify!

This thread isn't really about the fact that he is afraid to debate McCain in a town hall. That's been well established. It's more about yet another example of his lies and hypocrisy when he says "I'm ready to duel John McCain on taxes right here, quick draw," and yet runs and hides from any debate with John McCain. He hasn't even had the guts to do an organized debate, much less a "quick draw" without prepared questions and answers.

Taskr, Again, I reiterate, it will surprise me if Obama agrees to any debate of any kind! He is terribly afraid of anything he can't control!

Will either candidate? Obama and McCain are avoiding the real issues and I do not like either one! Neighter one knows much of anyhting about real issues, so instead one calls the other ignorant and too young, while the other calls the other guy a cranky old man! Is THIS kind of immaturity what we want for president? NOT ME! Neither have really addressed the BIG issues! -I do not want either one. They have OLD ideas and we've already se these not work? No tahnks..I want Ron Paul. He IS innovative thinking and progressive and DOES have answers to ur problems. He IS still running and he has great ideas! Check him out on YouTube! (I will vote for him. He may not win, but at least MY conscience will be clear.-I will vote for the best person for the job and not just what the medias tells me to vote for!)

Kennyrose, I finally found something you said that I'm in 100% agreement with! "...please make your vote count Americans future depend on each of us to being on top of our game." I know I intend to make my vote count and I've personally gotten about a dozen new voters to register, that's 12 and counting! They're also very scared for our future and the future of our country. They're all, like me, very much afraid of what a McBush - oops, McCain - Presidency would mean for all of us! Annie

Well good for you. Standing behind the person you believe in is important. Ron Paul was one of the many people who the networks decided wasn't good enough to win and subsequently didn't really get enough air time to get his message out. I wouldn't say McCain is avoiding the real issues. He's been doing town hall meetings regularly that allow people like you to ask him the hard questions and get real answers. The reason I have so little respect for Obama is that he NEVER answers questions that aren't scripted with prepared answers handed to him. You may not agree with McCain's politics, and obviously he's spent more time in the media attacking Obama than stressing his own ideas, but you have to respect the fact that he's actually willing to talk to the American people face to face instead of hiding behind podiums and teleprompters.

Taskr, am I right to get the impression you'd like to see a debate between Obama and McCain? Somehow I seem to recall that you've subtly hinted at this... Seriously, you and I both know there will be debates with the locations and forums to be decided later between both campaigns. Why should Obama just accept McCain's challenge at face value and allow him to dictate when and where? I know McCain supporters and Obama bashers, which sometimes are and sometimes are not one and the same, like to claim that Obama can't answer a question without a teleprompter or prepared speech and that McCain does well in this type of forum but I beg to differ. It seems every time McCain opens his mouth he has yet another gaffe. I just heard that last night at a fund raiser when the cameras weren't rolling he said his "No new taxes" promise is something that's just for negotiation. HUH??? Anyway, believe it or not, I'm with you, I can't wait for the debates to begin. I think they'll be real eye-openers! Annie

Believe it or not I'd also like to see Obama answer some questions but I'm confident he will in due time. Meanwhile, I hope McCain just keeps on talking. Annie

Obviously I want to see a debate between the two, but it's more than that. I'd like to see Obama answer questions. McCain has walked into hostile territory including the NAACP and several majority democrat areas and held town hall meetings. Even if Obama doesn't want to do town hall debates the least he could do is answer some real questions instead of making speeches and running away. He wouldn't even answer questions when he spoke to the NAACP and they are very anti-republican, despite their polite attitude towards McCain, so it would have been easy for him.

Maybe they'll start sending the questions and answers to his Blackberry. He sure loves showing that thing off as an example of how he's a "regular guy".

Twoey, I think that you might have missed the subjects of this conversation. from your response it would appear that you would be speaking of George W. Bush. Taskr, was talking about McCain, and Obama, both are very good public speakers, and both are pretty good on their feet. I have never heard either one of them sound like a drunk college kid on a Saturday night after doing a keg stand. It was said many times by Bush administration memebers that when Bush goes off of script, they all cringed.

Taskr, how many town hall meetings did Bush do in 2004? Obama is doing what he does best, and McCain is doing what he does best. You won't learn much about either man untill after the conventions, and into the debates. You say that Obama is hiding from debate with McCain, but McCain wants to debate Obama because no one cares about McCain. The comparison between McCain and Bob Dole are coming out hard and heavy now, and he is doing what ever he can to draw more attention to him. I heard a story last week that McCain was going to a campaign rally, and there was only one reporter there to meet his plane. That isn't good at all for McCain.

"Taskr, how many town hall meetings did Bush do in 2004?" What exactly does Bush have to do with this discussion? Why must I constantly remind democrats that George W. Bush is not running for president this year? It's between McCain and Obama at this point. "McCain wants to debate Obama because no one cares about McCain" I wouldn't have used those words, but basically what you're saying is true. He needs the attention that would come from a debate. Ben Stein even said that McCain's campaign is more pathetic than Bob Dole's and there are definitely some parallels. Both were war heroes and both faced smooth talking lawyers who never served in the military granted Obama wasn't a draft dodger like Clinton. My issue in this discussion is that Obama said "I'm ready to duel John McCain on taxes right here, quick draw," and yet he continues to hide from any debates with McCain and has yet to answer any questions from regular Americans. It's like shouting threats while running away from your opponent.

If Obama was a great orator as everyone has made him out to be he would be able to cream McCain from city to city. The problem is Obama cannot but two intelligent statements together without David Axelrod writing them for Obama. McCain is not a very good speaker, but he can think on the run. In a town hall forum Obama cannot have prepared speeches made by Mr. Axelrod, he has to answer them on the fly. A silver tongue can only get you so far and when battling logic an orator is no match. Obama if you cannot even take on John McCain how do you think you will be able to take on dictators. Show us Obama what you got, or are you afraid of little old McCain.

I saw him one time on the Oprah show and thought wow this guy should run for President. Now that he is running I have my doubts about him. It seems like he really doesn't have much back bone at all. I don't trust him for that reason. On the other hand his wife would make a great first lady. McCain side I think he would make a good President but I am not so sure about how good his wife would be for the white house. So maybe we should be voting for Obama because I think it is his wife that has been the driving force to get him to where he is today. Not so sure about that but something does seems so wishy washy about Barack Obama. Does anyone else think so.

Well her charitable work has been worldwide. She's not just working in a soup kitchen, although even that is an admirable job. She's actually got a substantial amount of accomplishments in the business world as well as the non-profit industry. I won't argue with you on the hair thing. I know that a person's appearance has a big effect on how they're looked at. That's why Obama is so popular. If McCain looked like George Clooney he'd be winning right now.

Just for the record, I was in favor of Obama for President a long time before he ever announced he was going to run for the office. The sad thing is the more this goes on and on I am leaning more towards McCain. Also for the Record, I live in Canada so it doesn't matter what I think. :)

I really don't' know much about her. I saw just a few minutes of her on the view and I felt really angry about feeling like she was trying to act and look like something she wasn't. Then I thought maybe it isn't her per say, maybe it is the hair dressers fault. I don't' know who did her hair that day but I felt like she wasn't being herself and also that possible the people who did her hair were not on her side and wanted her to come off looking like an insecure women. I know you must be thinking how can a hair style turn me off so much but really it was the whole package. I have seen her with her husband on TV and she seems so quiet like she doesn't' really have a voice. Then when I saw her on the view and she looked like she was trying to look so so young and looking so insecure I just got the impression she wasn't really political office type. She looked more like the trophy wife that looks great on the arm and spends her free time doing nice little things like charity work. Charity work is great of course but I wonder if a first lady should be more then that. Meaning including charity work and taking on other major roles for improving society. Sorry I wrote this fast as I have to go, I hope this makes sense.

No one has ever became president on the premise of hope. Obama is the closest to becoming president. I think there is a reason why he does not want to go head to head with McCain is because you can not win a debate on hope. Just imagine. Everything Obama would say would be about change or hope. Well hope doesn't pay the bills. If you were hoping for a paycheck you wouldn't make it very far.

He would say "I hope the economy changes for the better." "I hope things change in Iraq and the war would be over."
