It's Mutt's Day. Mutts deserve their day in the spotlight, as much as a pure breed. If you own a mutt, or you are a mutt (reading this), then you know this day is for you. By definition a mutt, sometimes called a "Halfbreed", is a dog that is of mixed breed. They come from two to several breeds. Purebred owners, and sometimes the public in general, view them as lesser in many ways. Mutt owners know better. They value the diversity and uniqueness of their mutts. Sure, a mutt doesn't carry the expensive price tag that a purebred with papers has on its head. To the mutt owner, however, the mutt is invaluable. In addition, mutts don't walk around needing to prove anything. You won't see them strutting around any dog shows trying to prove they are the best. To all mutts and and mutt owners, we hope you thoroughly enjoy Mutt's Day. Spend the day relaxing and doing all the things you and your dog like to do. Do so with both of your chins held high. For your mutt is worth a million bucks! How I miss having a dog around. We had one growing up, and I was allergic to it then. Now I have asthma and one of my triggers is Dogs. Boo Hoo. we have a mutt. he is the oddest mutt youll ever meet though. he is a king charles caviler spanial mixed with a lhasa apso. [i think i spelled it right] but we love him and he is the best dog ever!

I love all dogs also whehter they are a mutt or not. We have had our Pomeranian for 10 years now and we love him very much. He is part of the family. He went bye bye with my daughter but when he gets back, I will give him a hug for you and for me. I'm sorry that you cannot have dogs.

My FIL had a pomeranian and he was the cutest, nicest little dog. He sure could make me sneeze though. I feel bad for my girls because they are missing out on having a dog. Luckily our best friend's have a dog so my girls get to enjoy her. Thanks for the response.

Well, kimbers867, you have done it again. I have never heard of Mutt's Day. How can it be that I've lived over half of a century and not known this? It is almost too much to bear. I guess I can be comforted knowing that I'll live this second half of my life with the knowledge that July 31st is National Mutt's Day. And for that, I'll always thank you, kimbers867. P.S. We don't have a dog but there is a fat, feral calico cat that hangs around by our bird feeders...

I never knew about it until I read about it. I think it is great because they should not be forgotten, just because they don't have a piece of paper. PealGrace, could you tell me something. What is a feral cat? I have heard the name before but I don't know what it is. Thanks for the response.

Hi kimbers867. The word, "feral" means "wild, untamed or savage." Basically, feral cats are cats that live outdoors on their own and really don't belong to anyone. This tends to happens to kittens that are dumped, say, out on a farm and have to learn to find food and water on their own. Feral animals tend to stay far away from humans as they are "undomesticated." They often fight with domesticated animals. There is a feral cat that hangs around underneath our bird feeders and he's waiting to eat the birds that come! Sometimes, we stop putting feed out for awhile because we feel like we are tricking the birds into getting eaten by that cat! In Florida, there are many, many feral cats because it never gets cold enough to kill them and they just keep breeding and having more babies. It is a big problem here. Some people even put out cat food for them once in awhile. Even then, many times the cats will run away from humans. Take care, kimbers867. And I do agree with you, just because a dog doesn't have papers doesn't mean it doesn't have value and can't bring someone somewhere alot of joy.

My Babies! - Here they are playing together with a rope toy bone several winters ago.

I never knew there was such a day! I celebrate both my dogs each day. One is a pure breed (pit bull terrier) and the other is a black lab and akita mix. I love them both very much and treat them like my sons. My boyfriend is a good daddy to them also. We hug them and play with them each and every day!:)

Hrmmm! I have never heard of this day. I will go home and hug my dog, but I don't have a mutt. I think all dogs are great mutt's or not.

Wow, you surely love man’s best friend and thanks for giving the definition of mutt. Though all the dogs I came across were purebreds, but I do think that we can never be always sure. As it is, dogs with papers are very expensive so many people just go for small puppies from any source, anything that catches their fancy. No way to tell if the puppy is purebred or mutt (or is there? I don’t know)…so they grow up fulfilling all the expectations of their masters and then some more too. And dogs should be prized more for their loyalty than for some fancy dog competition.

Yay to mutt's day!!! They are just as important as any purebred dog. I have purebred pug's but have just taken in a little dog that is jack russell cross ?????? and she will be just as spoiled and treated just the same as the purebred dog's in our household no one is different!

I didn't know there was a mutts day! hehe that is cool. I have a mutt. My dog is a pitt bull and gray-hound mix or pit-bull/lab mix and I celebrate my dog every day and he just recently turned two years old and me and my family celebrated his birthday

i guess i have another day to really celebrate him. hehehe

All of the dogs our family has had over the years have been Mutts. Better than the best in my opinion! My parents received as a gift a pure bred Shih Tzu (Rascal) and he is adorable, and being treated/raised as a mutt and loving it! :-) I don't have a dog of my own, but am an animal lover so I will someday soon. (hope my cats can handle it).... Can't hug mine, so will hug my neighbor's!!

A friend of mine has a Snoodle (poodle snauzhier (sp?) and she is the best dog. She had to be given away because of a divorce and she is the greatest dog. My friend really lucked out!

Good day...All dogs deserved their day. We had the so called "mutt" and they were as good and lovable as the pure ones. They were also loyal and I don't mind having one again.

OH I had no idea they had a name for dogs of unspecified mixed breeds. Can you tell me more? do you specifically breed a mutt by combining the characteristics of a breed or are they "an accident"? I certainly didnt know they had a special day either. I always liked animals and never really cared for breeding. I have 2 cats and they are what we call garbage bin: no breed. Minu is my garfield and Jona is an extremely pretty girl. Even the vet wanted to know what breed that was! well... garbage bin. I know the granny is a siamees. she is silvergrey striped like the whiskas cat.

I'm not to sure about the breeding. I know a lot of breeders are breeding two different types of dogs to create new breeds. When I was growing up we called mutts Heinz 57's because they were all mixed up with their breeding. Thanks for the response.

I've never heard of this day before. Thank you for spreading the word! I have a mutt and a purebreed. I love them both so such! My mutt is black lab, german sherpard, and pitbull. She takes after and looks like the Black Lab in her! I'll be sure to give her a hug, and an extra treat today! Take care!

I have always had mutts. It wasn't intill later I got my sheltie. But all my dogs have unique personalatys. You can tell the diffrence between my sheltie and my terrier mix.

Hi friend, i never heard of this day. Mutt's day really interesting one. I know only its one meaning. When i see about this day. I made a big laugh. Then i looked over the interest. It is pets. After i read the description, i understood that what is Mutt.
